Often referred to as the headquarters of British horseracing, Newmarket is in the centre of the British flat racing.
The course hosts two of the best races in the British calendar with the two classics, The 1000 Guineas and the 2000 Guineas whis are run over a weekend in April / May.
There are 32 Group 1 races run in Great Britain and 9 of these are held here. including The July Cup, The Sun Chariot Stakes, Cheveley Park Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes.
The history of the course goes back to 1666 When King Charles II returned to his bothood haunts on the heath and this year there are records of six races in this year on the heath.
Tecnically there is a third track, a round course which holds The Town Plate is the oldest race dating back to this time.
The racecourse has two actual tracks/courses. The Rowly mile course is used for races all races held outside the month of July when races are run on the July Course" during this time.
The facilities at the course are first class as you would expect and are all meeting are well attended.
Enclosures across both the courses include the Premier enclosure, requiring smart dress, which features views of the winning post, parade rings and winners’ circle. Less formal is the Grandstand and paddock, also providing good viewing, whilst the Rowley / Garden enclosure offers a family atmosphere with picnic areas, children’s playground and a variety of free children’s activities. Accompanied children under 18 are also admitted free of charge.
