The_2000_Guineas An_English_Classic

The 2000 Guineas The 2000 Guineas is the first of the five English classic flat races for three year old thoroughbred horses.

The race is open to colts and fillies and is run in early May at Newmarket racecourse over the famous Rowley Mile.

The race is run at the same meeting as another classic race which is the equivalent race for the flillies only which is called the 1000 Guineas.

Although this race is open to both colts and fillies it is the colts that contest this race as the fillies of this class always opt for the fillies only option.

Race Preview

1 (2)    211-2 Abtaal (USA) 30 3    9-0    J C Rouget    C Soumillon
Winner of a group 3 race in France last October. Raced once this year when beaten favourite in a group 3 in France behind French Fifteeen. Good solid horse could well make the frame.

2 (8)    1222-2 Boomerang Bob (IRE) 14 3    9-0    J W Hills    S Sanders
Won first time out at Kempton but since four seconds. The first in a novice at Windsor in May 2011 then second in the group 2 Norfolk stakes and then a group 3 in France, only run this year second in the group 3 Aon Greenham stakes. Needs to step up in class today and has it all to do.

3 (14)    12- Born To Sea (IRE) 188 3    9-0    J M Oxx    J P Murtagh
Winner of his first race a listed event at the Curragh. Could only manage second at odds-on favourite in a group 3 at Leopardstown. Horse was lame after that race back in October but looks classy animal and could be one to win should the favourite not oblige.

4 (11)    114-3 Bronterre 14 3    9-0    R Hannon    J P Spencer
Fourth in last season's Dewhurst behind Parish Hall and then third last month in the group 3 Aon Greenham stakes. Will have to improve somewhat to win this race but does have the services of Jamie Spencer on board.

5 (12)    11- Camelot 196 3    9-0    A P O'Brien    J P O'Brien
Unbeaten colt and longtime worthy favourite after the very impressive run in the racing Post Trophy, a group one event, at Doncaster last October. If trained on surely the one they all have to be today. Very classy animal.

6 (5)    31158-1 Caspar Netscher 14 3    9-0    A J Mccabe    S W Kelly
10 runs last year including wins in the group 2 Gimcrack stakes and also the group 2 duty-free Mill Reef stakes at Newbury. Went to America at the end of the season and Ran in the breeders cup juvenile and ran well that day and weakened in the final furlong finishing eighth. Has had the benefit of a run this year when a good winner of the Aon Greenham stakes may be better than his long odds suggest.

7 (3)    11151-5 Coupe de Ville (IRE) 16 3    9-0    R Hannon    P Hanagan
Some good runs last year in listed company and will have to improve here today. Has had the benefit of a run this year when fifth in 1 mile 2f event on good to soft at Newmarket.

8 (15)    313- Fencing (USA) 196 3    9-0    J H M Gosden    William Buick
Winner of an Newbury listed event last October and followed that up 2 months later when third to the very smart Camelot in the racing Post Trophy, run well but edged right in the final furlong. Not without a chance of making the frame.

9 (16)    11121-1 French Fifteen (FR) 30 3    9-0    N Clement    O Peslier
A winner of six from his eight runs in France including a group one in soft ground. Had one run this season in a group one race in France which he won from Abtal. He is another who could run really well today find could easily make the frame given that the ground is likely to be soft.

10 (4)    01-Mar Hermival (IRE) 30 3    9-0    M Delzangles    G Benoist
French radier who ran really well in a group 3 last month. He is something of an unknown quantity.

11 (17)    111212- Power 210 3    9-0    A P O'Brien    R L Moore
Really good horse from the O'Brien stable. Acts on soft ground as he showed last year when winning the group one Goffs National stakes at the Curragh. Finished the season when second in the Dewhurst at Newmarket in October. Will have the services of Ryan Moore on board today and is another who looks like he could be made for this race and finishing in the frame would not be unexpected.

12 (1)    4012-4 Ptolemaic 16 3    9-0 v    B Smart    T Eaves
Ran well in the group 3 Craven stakes last month and finished fourth at big odds. That was a big step up on last year and will need to improve massively to take any part in the finish of this well contested race.

13 (13)    11482-4 Redact (IRE) 17 3    9-0    R Hannon    Jim Crowley
Run well last year in the Dubai duty free Mill Reef stakes when second behind Caper Netcher but could only finish fourth in a listed race last month will need to improve a great deal to win this race.

14 (10)    11328-5 Red Duke (USA) 35 3    9-0    J J Quinn    T P Queally
A group 2 winner last year at Newmarket and Ran in Maydan finishing fifth. Is another that will have to improve to take part in the finish of this race.

15 (7)    153362- Saigon 196 3    9-0    J A R Toller    R Havlin
Although running well in group events last season will have to improve a great deal to win this race today.

16 (6)    11975-1 Talwar (IRE) 21 3    9-0    J Noseda    L Dettori
Winner of last year's Solario stakes he is another who will have to improve considerably to take part in the finish of this race although he does have Frankie Dettori on board today.

17 (9)    1- Top Offer 267 3    9-0    R Charlton    J Doyle
Only one run but unbeaten when winning a maiden very impressively at the end of last season. With so few runs it means that it is difficult to fully assess this horse but is well thought of by his connections.

18 (18)    21415-1 Trumpet Major (IRE) 16 3    9-0    R Hannon    R Hughes
Ran well last season running eight times. Winner of the Champagne stakes at Doncaster (a group 2) and also a very impressive win last month in the Craven stakes where he is a on really strongly. A strong candidate for making the frame today.
