The_Race

The 2000 Guineas is the first of the five English classic flat races for three year old thoroughbred horses.

The 2000 guineas was so named so because the prize money for winning the race was 2000 Guineas.

The 2000 Guineas is the first leg of the traditional Triple Crown which is rated as the supreme test for thoroughbred colts which includes the Derby and the St Leger. The last horse to win the Triple Crown was Nijinsky in 1970.

Well this year’s first classic would seem to be something of a walkover with the main runner from the Aiden O’Brien’s yard being the very smart Air Force Blue. Air Force Blue enjoyed an exceptional 2-year-old season. This bay colt by War Front started off winning a little cosily by a head and then suffered his only defeat in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes at Ascot on good to firm ground. He was then tried back in Ireland in a Group 1 where he won the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes by 2 lengths. He improved on that in his final two runs winning by bigger margins, first in the International stakes and finally in the Dewhurst at Newmarket in October. This is a top class colt who looks to have this race at his mercy and should be a convincing winner.

The main opposition may come in the smart chestnut colt, Stormy Antarctic.
This colt by Stormy Atlantic has had the benefit of a run this season when he won the Group 3 Craven Stakes over this course and distance on the 14th of April. He looked very good in the race and won by over 3 lengths. Last season he improved throughout the season with the highlight his 2nd in the Group 1 International stakes behind Johannes Vermeer. A good chance if the favourite is not spot on today.

Massaat, a bay colt by Teofilo is in the ownership of Hamdan Al Maktoum and is trained by Owen Burrows.
He was 2nd behind Air Force blue last season in the Dewhurst and has 3 ¼ lengths to make up on that run. He has to improve on that but could well run into a place.

The only horse ever to get the better of Air Force Blue was Mark Johnson trained Buratino. This chestnut gelding by Exceed and Excel look really good on ground that was on the firmer side of good and his chance would be enhanced on firm / good/firm ground.
He was well exposed in his two-year-old season running 8 times. If he gets his ground, he could be a player.

Group 1 Racing Post trophy winner Marcel is another who continued to improve. A bay Colt by Lawman he looked best of all when upped in trip to 1 mile.

A very popular winner Galileo Gold would see Frankie Dettori providing his famous flying dismount in front of the Newmarket crowd. This Chestnut gelding by Paco Boy won the Group 2 Vintage Stakes at Goodwood but when stepped up to a mile finished in his worse position of his season however he was staying on at the finish and looks as if this might suit today.
