The_2017_Race

Plenty of runners this year in the Badger Ales Trophy and we start with the top weight Theatre Guide.
A 10-year-old bay gelding, he runs in good races and is often good at this time of year. He has had a wind operation during the summer so we might see an improved run today.

Yala Enki is a young seven-year-old gelding who is still on the upgrade. Likes soft ground and was a very smart winner of a handicap chase in March. Plenty in his favour here today.

Double Shuffle is a really good young seven-year-old who was tried in the Grand National but was pulled up. Was a good second at Chepstow on 15 October, but looks to need genuinely good ground so that would be a worry today.

Southfield Theatre, is the Paul Nicholls, Sam Twiston-Davies combination who have been in great form lately. He has been off the track for almost a year but he did run in this race last year and was going extremely well, and looked like the winner when falling at the last.

Tempestatefloresco is another runner for Colin Tizard but is a horse whose really good form is on much firmer ground.

Mr Mix. A course winner who won here last time out. He will be spot on today and often runs well for this jockey. A very good chance today.

Fletcher's Flyer. Harry Fry sends this nine-year-old bay gelding to start his season. Well exposed and will have to improve to win this one, but could make the frame.

Another Paul Nicholls runner is Present Man. He had a good season last year and 2 nice races around this time of year. One a nice race over 2 miles five in October at Kempton. That was a novice hurdle and should have put him spot on for this race.

Fox Appeal has already had three runs and showed improvement on every one. They were over a shorter distance so he stepping up a bit today, although he has won over 3 miles in the past.

Vic De Touzaine French import trained by Venetia Williams on soft ground probably has everything going for him sure today. He won a Chase back in October and has gone up 7 pounds for that win so clearly, he will have to improve again but would not be a great surprise especially if there's even more rain.

Final Nudge put in some good novice runs last year and could improve again this year. Would not be a great surprise to see him the frame, he is also a course winner.

Southfield Royale looked really good the season before last but suffered last year. Probably best watched at this time

Pilgrims Bay. The course winner and a good winner of a grade 3 handicap chase back in February. Will have to improve today, but young and sure to have some to come.

Alfie Spinner. Eighth in this race last year and second in two previous years. A really nice big chaser but it 12 years old looks to have little chance today.

Relentless Dreamer. Ran in snatches on first run this season in a race shorter than this at Chepstow, but he was staying on at the end. Will need plenty of improvement to win this.

Mont Royale. Well exposed and has plenty on his plate to live with these guys. The addition of headgear today might show improvement but it would need to he has not been given a break in his running this season.

Henllan Harry. Looks a bit below these on class but a promising run at Worcester in October over a distance that was probably too short for him, he will be spot on for this run.

Fact of the Matter. A young horse who rarely puts in a bad performance. He will need to improve on what he's done so far, he has been wearing a hood, but not today, significant?

Well there you have it a very competitive race, Yala Enki looks good should the expected rain come also I think that Pilgrims Bay looks too high a price. All the Paul Nicholls horses have appeal, the best of which may be Mr Mix who gets the nod today.

Story_of_the_Race

Well what a race this turned out to be, it was a relentless slog in soft ground with only 6 horses finishing from 16 starters.

Present man who came here on the back of a previous run was leading early on and always prominent throughout the race. He stayed on really well when pressed on the run in to win by ½ length.

Final nudge was in the mid-division throughout the race and responded well to pressure from 3 out and finished a short-head 2nd.

Theatre Guide was held up but ran well in the race. He stayed on for 3rd Place behind the leaders.

Southfield theatre was held up and stayed on for 4th 3 ¾ lengths behind the 3rd

Fox Appeal was in mid-division and stayed on for 5th 6 lengths behind the 4th.

Pilgrims Bay was held up but was no fluent at his fences but stayed on and was just a neck behind the 5th.

All other horses were pulled up in the race.

Stewards Report
Permission was given for YALA ENKI (FR) to go early to post.
The performance of MR MIX (FR) which started favourite and was pulled up, was considered. The representative of Paul Nicholls could offer no explanation for the gelding’s performance. MR MIX (FR) was routine tested.
Following the race, the representative of Peter Bowen reported that HENLAN HARRI (IRE), which was pulled up, was unsuited by the Soft going on this occasion and would prefer a quicker surface
