THE 2019 RACE

-----------------------------------

Alpha Des Obeaux is a good horse who has not had good form at this course. Last of 4 over the Mildmay course and fell in the 2018 National. Top weight not ideal.
Ballyoptic is a consistent type who loves the soft ground. Fell in last years race.
Definitely Red is a course winner but was pulled up over these fences in the 2017 Grand national (saddle Slipped). Could go well today.
Le Breuil is a young horse going the right way. Does not look to have the experience for this race but will have the best amateur riding, Jamie Codd.
One For Arthur. Great horse and 2017 Grand National Winner. Poor since but has the class.
Vintage Clouds Good horse who fell in National Ran better in the Scottish National (6th)
Vieux Lion Rouge 2nd last year and has had a few finishes in the Grand National. Good chance.
Mulcahys Hill. A good young horse who comes here after a good win last time out.
As De Mee. Bundered and unseated last year. Has a bit to prove.
Abolitionist needs a boost in the form to win this.
Walk in the Mill. Winner last season and 4th in National. Great chance but PU last time a slight worry.
Minellacebration. Should stay OK and a good jumper but is another who will need to improve.
Wadrin Star. Here after a good win last time out. Will need to improve.
Like the Sound. Somerset national Winner but more needed here.
Ballydine needs to improve. PU last time out.
Mysteree. Good win last time out but more needed.
Kimberlite Candy. Some nice form and gets in off low weight.
Regal Flow. Good chaser but at 12 an unlikely winner.

STEWARDS REPORT

-----------------------------------

Permission was given for MULCAHYS HILL (IRE) and REGAL FLOW to both be mounted in the chute.
An enquiry was held to consider interference approaching the home bend involving AS DE MEE (FR), placed sixth, ridden by Bryony Frost and VIEUX LION ROUGE (FR), placed ninth, ridden by Tom Scudamore. Frost was cautioned for careless riding as she had allowed her horse to edge left-handed when insufficiently clear causing Scudamore to be briefly tightened for room against the rail.
The performance of MULCAHYS HILL (IRE), which started favourite and was pulled up, in a field of eighteen runners, was considered. The representative of Warren Greatrex’s explanation that the gelding was unsuited by the drying ground, which was officially described as Soft, Good to Soft in places on the National course and would prefer a softer surface, was noted. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of MULCAHYS HILL (IRE), during routine testing, failed to reveal any abnormalities.
The winner WALK IN THE MILL (FR), appeared to show improved form, compared with its previous run at Wincanton on 9 November 2019 where the gelding was pulled up in a field of thirteen runners. Robert Walford’s explanation that the yard was returning to form, was noted. WALK IN THE MILL (FR) was routine tested.
Richie McLernon the rider of KIMBERLITE CANDY (IRE), placed second, was suspended for 2 days for using his whip above the permitted level from the third last fence.
Following the race, the Veterinary Officer reported that VIEUX LION ROUGE (FR), placed ninth, lost his left-hind shoe, the Veterinary Officer reported that ABOLITIONIST (IRE), which was pulled up, lost his left-fore shoe.
