The outstanding Hurricane Fly comes back to the race which saw him beat into 3rd last year. That was a small blip on his record and he will be all out to put that right today.

Reigning champion Rock On Ruby will try and ensure that Hurricane Fly will not have it all his own way today.

Race Preview

Balder Succes

Presumably this horse runs here as his last run was an 8 1/2 length third to Zarkander Wincanton in the Kingwell hurdle. Looks to have plenty to do today and is the lowest rated horse in the race he would be a shock winner.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and two furlongs.

Binocular

2010 winner of this race shows that this horse has some class. Has run well in subsequent races since then but often just does not do quite enough to win. He was fourth in this race last year behind Rock on Ruby, Overturn and Hurricane Fly. If back to his best he could run well hear today, and multiple winners are by no means rare in this race however usually horses win in subsequent years with out a gap in-between. A top-class hurdler who will be ridden by the champion jockey today. It would be foolish to leave this good horse out of any reckoning.
Wins of come on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and one furlong.

Cinders and Ashes

Donald McCain's runner was a really fine novice hurdler last season. That culminated in a win in the supreme novices hurdle at this meeting where he beat the very smart Darlan. We have not seen the best of him this year yet. In his first race he was second to Countrywide Flame over 2 miles in very heavy ground. His next run was at the Kempton Christmas meeting on Boxing Day where Darlan completely reversed the placings winning the Christmas hurdle with this horse back in fifth (again on heavy). A return to last year's form would give him a chance but recent form is a worry. Although this horse has won twice on heavy ground he gives the impression that the slightly better ground he will get today may suit him better.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and one furlong.

Countrywide Flame

Last season's Triumph hurdle winner, this smart horse could just may be overpriced today given the well fancied leaders in the market. A 72 rated horse on the flat, he took really well to the hurdling game and has won some nice races and has also run well in defeat. He was fourth in the Christmas hurdle on ground that was probably too heavy for him. His last race he was second behind Rock on Ruby in the 32 red hurdle at Doncaster. Must improve somewhat to overturn that form with the current champion but if on a good day he could be one of the more lively outsiders.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and two furlongs.

Granduet

a good horse who was third in the 2011 Triumph hurdle. Improved that season and won the Betfair hurdle in November and then the international hurdle a month later where he had Overturn in behind. He has only had one run this season and that was again in the international hurdle where he was a good second behind Zarkandar. Not sure why he should overturn that form today over the same trip and course, and did have a slight setback in training one month ago. Another lively runner who can't be ruled out.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and one furlong

Hurricane Fly

Top class Irish raider who was the winner of this race in 2011 putting up a fantastic performance that day. Could only manage third last season when odds on and was reported later by the Jockey that he did not give him a good feel throughout the race. Ruby Walsh rides again today and is this horse' is regular partner. Ruby thinks a lot of this horse and obviously is a really good judge. Three wins from three runs this season, although he has not been running against the classy opposition that he will be facing today. A worthy favourite but this looks a very good renewal of the race, and if back on form will take a lot of beating. But as we saw last year no horse is unbeatable.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles unfulfilled longings.

Kyber Kim

A nice tough hurdler who although is not a prolific winner, he has run some good races. He was second To Binocular in 2010 but could only make ninth last year. Ran second to Zarkander last month and looks unlikely to all reverse that form today.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and four furlongs.

Rock on Ruby

Reigning champion comes back again to try and regain his crown. He ran really well last season in a strongly run race which saw Overturn Blaze a Good Pace throughout the Race. He stayed on well that day and was going away at the finish of the race and had four of his rivals in behind. Went to Aintree and could only manage third in a race over 2 1/2 miles that looked to be too far for him. Has changed stables this year and was tried in the international hurdle in December at Cheltenham over this distance. Could only manage third that day and dropped away in the run in to the line. Only other start was a good win in a listed hurdle at Doncaster where the very smart Darlan fatally fell. Should run well today and has a good chance, and horses often go on to win in their second consecutive run in the race.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to good to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and one furlong.

Zarkander

Very interesting runner from the Paul Nicholls stable. Unbeaten in three runs this season and improving with every run. Started the season winning a grade 2 handicap at Wincanton and then a really fine win in the international hurdle with some of his rivals today in behind. He is one of the young horses that based on this season's form would not have to improve a great deal to win this race, and at six years old will surely have some more improvement to come. This horse looks sure to make a frame unless the race is run without any pace and becomes very tactical, but even then couldn't be ruled out.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and one furlong.
