A good contest in the making here with last year’s Gold Cup hope Silviniaco Conti set to make his seasonal debut in the race which he won in 2012. He did little wrong last year winning the Grade 1 King George at Kempton on Boxing Day and also the Grade 1 Betfair Bowl at Aintree either side of his fine 4th in the Gold Cup.

The Irish raider First Lieutenant is a first class chaser of the highest order and although he is not a frequent winner he does run in the best races of the season both here and in his native Ireland.

With 4 wins from 6 runs last season Taquin De Seuil will be on many short lists and comes here with the benefit of a run under his belt and will be fit to go today.

Menorah who has not been successful yet at this distance yet but is a classy horse all the same.

Looks like a good early season contest with clues for the season ahead to be found here!

NUMBER FORM NAME AGE WEIGHT TRAINER JOCKEY RATING

1 P051- Menorah 9 11-10 Philip Hobbs 165

"A bay gelding from the Philip Hobbs yard. A Grade 1 winner over both hurdles and chases. A smart hurdler who turned into a good chaser. Well exposed he is often found running in the good races of the season. A previous winner of the Grade 1 Manifesto Novices Chase at Aintree.
He seems best at around the 2 1/2 mile distance and when tried at distances approaching 3 miles he has only once shown good form and that was at Aintree in the Grade 1 Betfred Bowl Chase Where He Ran Second to the Very Smart First Lieutenant.

* Ground Preference* Wins Have Come on Ground Ranging from Good through to Heavy.
* Maximum winning distance* Hurdle 2 Miles 1 Furlong: Chase 2 Miles and 6 Furlongs.

"

2 3141- Silviniaco Conti 8 11-10 Paul Nicholls Noel Fehily 174

" A top class chestnut gelding running out of the Paul Nicholls yard.
This horse was a very good hurdler who took really well to chasing winning the Grade 2 Mildmay Novices Chase at Aintree in 2012 beating the very smart Champion Court. He is a previous winner of the Grade 2 Charlie Hall Chase, the Grade 1 Betfair chase and very impressively the William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton Park. He has run twice in the Cheltenham Gold cup and looked an unlucky faller in 2013 but was actually beaten fair and square in the 2014 renewal. This horse is young and still improving and is one of the top chasers in the country today.

* Ground preference* Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to soft.
* Maximum winning distance* Hurdle 2 miles 4 furlongs: Chase 3 miles and 1 furlong.
* Previous win/run (to end of last season)* Hurdle 5/7: Chase 7/14.
"

3 7U513- The Giant Bolster 9 11-10 David Bridgwater 164

"A 9-year-old bay gelding from the David Bridgwater yard. He surprised everyone when running a very fine second in the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup, at least everyone except his trainer.
He is a previous winner of the Grade 2 Argento chase and has good form especially with some cut in the ground. His runs can sometimes be a little unpredictable with every now and again him throwing in a poor run and then spectacularly returning to form.
Just now getting probably to the peak of his form age range.

* Going Preference* Wins Have Come on Ground Ranging from Good through to Heavy.
* Maximum winning distance* Hurdle 2 Miles and 3 Furlongs: Chase 3 Miles and One Half Furlongs.
* Previous Win/Run (to End of Last Season)* Hurdle 1/8: Chase 4/20.
"

4 1235-B Double Ross 8 11-6 Nigel Twiston-Davies 152

"An Eight-year-old Chestnut Gelding from the Nigel Twiston-Davies training yard. This horse has been showing good form which came to fruition in the 2013/2014 season when in early to mid-season he seemed the model of consistency. He is dual Grade 3 winner and is probably still on the upgrade.

Only one run this season where he was hampered and then brought down on 10 October in an intermediate chase at Newton Abbott.

* Going preference* Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to soft.
* Maximum winning distance* Hurdle 2 miles and 5 furlongs: Chase 2 miles and 5 furlongs.
* Previous win/run (to the end of last season)* Hurdle 2/16: Chase 3/11.
"

5 3211-3 Taquin Du Seuil 7 11-5 Jonjo OŽNeill 159

"A seven-year-old brown/bay gelding from the Jonjo O'Neill yard. A French import and as you would expect runs very well on soft or heavy ground. He got off to a flying start in this country and within three months won the Grade 1 Challow hurdle.
Then he was sent chasing and in the 2014 Cheltenham Festival he was a really good winner of the JLT novices Chase. A young horse still on the upgrade and certainly one to look for when the ground is heavy.

One run this season when fourth, 24 lengths behind Wonderful Charm at Newton Abbott.

* Going preference* Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
* Maximum winning distance* Hurdle 2 miles and 5 furlongs: Chase 2 miles and 5 furlongs. * Previous win/run (to the end of last season)* Hurdle 3/5: Chase 4/6.
"

6 4/48-4 Medermit 10 11-0 Alan King Wayne Hutchinson 156

"A 10-year-old grey gelding who runs from the Alan King yard. A well exposed 10-year-old who rarely runs a bad race.
A previous winner of the Grade 1 Scilly Isles Novices Steeplechase and the Grade 2 Halden Gold cup which he won in November 2011. He has found it impossible to win since despite running with credit in his races. A good horse who too often just finds a few to good in his races

.
* Going preference* Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to soft.
* Maximum winning distance* Hurdle 2 miles: Chase 2 miles and 4 1/2 furlongs.
* Previous Win/run (to the end of last season)* Hurdle 4/13: Chase 4/15.
"

11 52P7F- Wayward Prince 10 11-0 Hilary Parrott Dougie Costello 142

"A 10-year-old bay gelding from the Hillary Parrot training yard
A good Grade 1 consistent hurdler who ran really well in his novice season but has found it more difficult since.
He ran a good race in the 2013 Charlie Hall chase where he was second behind a very smart Harry Topper.
He was tried in the 2014 Grand National and run well for a long way before dropping back in falling three from home.

* Going preference* Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to soft.
* Maximum winning distance* Hurdle 3 miles and half a furlong: Chase 3 miles and 1 furlong.
* Previous Win/run (to the end of last season)* Hurdle 2/6: Chase 4/17.
