The_2014_Race

A good renewal of the Cheltenham Gold cup this year where Bobs Worth attempts to regain his crown. A worthy favourite in the race especially based on his last run which was win in the Lexus Chase.
His main opposition today comes from the very smart Silviniaco Conti from the Paul Nicholls yard. A horse that has not done a lot wrong and is in form as shown when he won the King George VI Chase at Kempton over the Christmas period. If the ground dries too much that would not be in his favour as he likes cut in the ground but he is a very worthy contender.
The best of the Irish raiders is Last Instalment who comes year with only one defeat in his six chases so far. A winner of three Grade 1 chases. He will have to improve to beat the mighty Bob's Worth but he may be one with a lot of improvement to come.
2012 runner up The Giant Bolster comes back for another crack at the race and is in really good form. Looks solid each way chance on known form as long as he does not make too many mistakes in running.
A fascinating renewal.

Colour No. Form Name Age Weight Trainer Jockey Rating
Owner_The_Not_Afraid_Partnership 1 11-61 Bobs Worth 9 11-10 Nicky Henderson Barry Geraghty 180
Top class chaser, and defending champion of the Gold cup. Won this race last year in great style. Not a flashy horse but one that gets the job done. In 2012 he was the winner of the RSA Chase and a year before that in 2011 he won the Albert Bartlett novice hurdle. Loves this course and will act on the ground.
A worthy favourite whose only poor career run was his first this season in the Betfair Chase at Haydock. He can be forgiven that run as something was not right but he did bounce back one month later at Leopardstown to win the Lexus Chase in good style.
10 wins from 14 races (5 chase wins from 8 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 3 miles and 3 furlongs.

Owner_Formulated_Polymer_Products_Ltd 4 3-1012 Cloudy Too 8 11-10 Sue Smith Jonathan England 157
A nice young eight-year-old horse from the Sue Smith yard. The grade 3 winner who took the Roland Merrick chase at Weatherby over Christmas last year. He ran in the Ascot chase, a grade 1 chase at the Berkshire course and was second to Captain Chris.
Will have to improve considerably to take part in the finish here and would be a surprise winner.
7 wins from 23 starts (5 wins from 14 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong.

Owner_Gigginstown_House_Stud 5 3-3423 First Lieutenant 9 11-10 M F Morris D.J.Casey 164
A good nine-year-old chestnut gelding who does most of his running in his native Ireland. Was second in the 2012 RSA Chase behind today's favourite Bobs Worth. Was second behind Cue Card in the Ryanair Chase year last year. Has not been on the top of his game this season but will be primed by his connections for this race.
7 wins from 25 starts (3 wins from 18 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong.

Owner_Mrs_Julian_Blackwell 7 16143 Houblon Des Obeaux 7 11-10 Venetia Williams Liam Treadwell 158
A nice seven your old French import to the Venetia Williams yard. A grade 2 novice chase winner who acts really well on soft ground. Does not look up to this standard yet, and the drying ground is a worry. Looks to have it all to do and would be a surprise winner running against this class of chasers.
7 wins from 31 starts (4 wins from 13 chase starts) on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles.

Owner_A_Brooks 8 1-F443 Katenko 8 11-10 Venetia Williams Aiden Coleman 155
Another mud loving French import from Venetia Williams yard. Ran well in handicap company last season but there is nothing to suggest that he should be good enough to finish in the frame in this top class race.
7 wins from 28 starts (5 wins from 17 chase starts) on ground ranging from soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and one furlong.

Owner_J_I_A_Charlton 9 512512 Knockara Beau 11 11-10 George Charlton Jan Faltejsek 146
Well exposed the 11-year-old bay gelding who has run with some improvement this year. He beat the smart At Fishers Cross over 3 miles on this course back in January, and then was second to long-run in February over 3 miles and 2 furlongs. Although they will good runs they weren't really up to the standard required to win a race of this calibre and here's another outsider who would be a surprise winner.
The 11 wins from 46 starts (5 chase wins from 26 starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 2 furlongs.

_Owner_Gigginstown_House_Stud 10 111/31 Last Instalment 9 11-10 Philip Fenton Brian O'Connell 170
One of the really fancied Irish raiders. The winner of the Irish Hennessy Gold cup at Leopardstown back in February when 8 1/2 lengths ahead of Tidal Bay. A really nice consistent sort who is on the upgrade. Would have to improve considerably on what he's done so far to date but is improving in leaps and bounds with every run. Sure to be well supported in the market and looks a lively contender.
8 wins from 11 starts (5 wins from 6 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles.

Owner_Dr_R_Lambe 11 31-876 Lord Windermere 8 11-10 J H Culloty Davy Russell 152
A good novice last year whose season ended by winning the RSA Chase at the Festival. His return this year has been disappointing and he has not improved as one would like. Has suffered in good races and looks as if he is below this class. May well struggle today.
5 wins from 15 starts (2 chase wins from 9 starts) on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and one furlong.

Owner_Lyreen_Syndicate 12 423-55 Lyreen Legend 7 11-10 D T Hughes P.Carberry 153
Another year Irish raider who had a good novice season last year. Another horse that is not making the same impression now running in good races. Ended last season second behind Lord Windermere in the RSA Chase. No reason to see worry he should overturn that or have enough improvement to be involved in the finish at this race.
4 wins from 18 starts (1 chase win from 8 chase starts) on ground ranging from soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 6 furlongs.

Owner_Andrea_and_Graham_Wylie 13 176611 On His Own 10 11-10 W P Mullins R Walsh 161
On his own well exposed 10-year-old Irish raider from the Willie Mullins yard. Will have the benefit of Ruby Walsh riding today. Has been tried on this course on three occasions without very much success. Tried in 2012 Grand National where he fell, and fell again in last season national. Another who would have to improve considerably today to have any chance of taking part in the finish here.
8 wins from 19 starts (5 wins from 12 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong.

Owner_Potensis_Limited_and_Chris_Giles 14 1F3-31 Silviniaco Conti 8 11-10 Paul Nicholls Noel Fehily 177
The top class young chaser from the Paul Nicholls yard. Well-respected, consistent and runs well here. He fell in last season's Gold cup when going really well and the opinion of many is that he may have won had he not fallen. I'm not sure if that would have been the case but he most likely would have made the frame. Has had two good runs this season the first in the Lancashire chase where he was third behind Cue Card and the smart Dynaste. On his most recent outing he was the winner of the King George VI Chase at Kempton over Christmas. Will not have to improve greatly and should be fighting out the finish today. A very classy animal who runs well and likes the course. Should be there or thereabouts at the finish.
11 wins from 19 starts (6 chase wins from 12 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 3 miles and one furlong.

Owner_Conyers_O'Reilly_Roddis_Zeffman 15 203-92 Teaforthree 10 11-10 Rebecca Curtis Nick Scholfield 153
A really nice long-distance chaser and winner of the 4 mile chase at the Festival in 2012. Ran a fantastic race in last year's Grand National finishing in third place. Will be heading for the national and will be strongly fancied for that. It'll be doubtful that he will trouble the judge here today however.
4 wins from 20 starts 3 cheers wins from 13 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 4 miles.

Owner_Simon_Hunt_and_Gary_Lambton 16 7-7U51 The Giant Bolster 9 11-10 David Bridgwater Tom Scudamore 160
This nine-year-old bay gelding from the small training yard of David Bridgwater was a useful hurdler and then looked much better when put over the larger obstacles. He is the sort to hit a fence or two and has fallen or unseated his rider on a few occasions however when he does get his jumping together he does stay on in a race. He was a winner of a grade 3 chase at Cheltenham in January 2012 and was then tried in the Gold cup two months later where he improved greatly in that race and was a surprise 50/1 second to Synchronised. Although he hasn't perhaps lived up to that form since he has run well and was fourth in last season's Gold cup where he was staying on at the end. Again his form seems to have waned until his last race on this course over 3 miles and two furlongs on heavy ground in the Argento chase which he again sprang to life and was a really good winner. A reproduction of that form would certainly see him make the frame here and who knows he may even be good enough to go one better than he in 2012. One of the better outsiders.
5 wins from 29 starts (4 chase wins from 19 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 2 furlongs.

Owner_Mr_Mrs_Sandy_Orr 17 81-131 Triolo DŽAlene 7 11-10 Nicky Henderson A.P.McCoy 158
A really smart young seven-year-old chaser will now be ridden by the champion jockey A. P. McCoy. The horse has come in for a lot of support in the last 10 days. He was a really good novice chaser who took just a little while to get his act together in his second season but ended it with two good wins. The first at the Aintree Festival where he won a Grade 3 chase and then at Huntington he won a three-mile handicap chase.
Two runs so far this season the last of which was when he won the Hennessy Gold cup chase at Newbury in November by a good margin.
On the upgrade and good recent form puts him in good stead here, he will have to do improve on what he's shown so far to win this race.
All his connections say that he is doing really well at home and is expected to come on. 6 wins from 15 starts (6 wins from 12 chase starts) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 3 miles and 3 furlongs
