THE 2022 RACE

-----------------------------------

Al Boum Photo. 2020 Winner and 3rd last year. Only one horse the great Kauto Star ever regained the title. Still a top-class horse. One run so far this season in a win in the Grade 3 Savills Chase in Ireland.

A Plus Tard. Second last year to stablemate. Started the season well winning the Betfair Chase. Short head second to Galvin at Leopardstown over Christmas. Live Chance today.

Asterion Forlonge. A good horse who was 3rd in the Marsh Chase last year. Going really well when he fell in the King George over Christmas. He would have gone close that day if not falling and that run puts him right in with a chance here. He can make mistakes but given a clear round could go close at a big price.

Aye Right. improving horse and third in the Paddy Power here in January. More improvement needed.

Chantry House. Consistent type of horse. Winner of the Marsh Novice chase here last year. Pulled up in the King George but a good winner of the Paddy Power in January. Looks the right sort with a good chance.

Conflated. Only 8 year old and shot to fame by beating last year's winner on last outing at Leopardstown by 6l. An interesting runner.

Galvin. From Gordon Elliott's stable. Has seen plenty of support recently. Beat A Plus Tard, Kemboy and Melon in a close finish in the Savills Chase last time out. Plenty short enough in price now but a strong move in the market on the day should not be ignored.

Melon. Well exposed now and never seems to win at this festival despite running well. Can be overlooked today.

Minella Indo. Last year's winner has not been up to that standard this season so far but was the same last season. Seems to take a little while to come to himself. Sure to be spot on for this race but this year looks a harder prospect. Still has claims though.

Protektorat. Put forward by many as the leader of the UK team. A good consistent horse who was a narrow second in the Paddy Power at this course over 2m4f and looked better at Aintree over three miles 1 furlong when winning the Grade 2 Many Clouds Chase. Young and improving a good chance.

Royal Pagaille. 6th in this race last season. This consistent performer was second in the Betfair, won the Peter Marsh and then was second in the Grade 2 Denman at Newbury last month. Probably even better than the bare form shows. Soft going would enhance his chances.

Santini. Second in the 2020 Gold cup but lost his way since and does not look the power of old. Has changed stable and put up a good performance in the Paddy Power at this course in Jan. Chances but would be a surprise winner.

Tornado Flyer. A good horse who seemed to struggle when stepped up to 3 miles back in 2020 and was sent back to race at around two and a half for a while. His most recent start was in the King George where he was returning to 3 miles. He was very good that day winning the prestigious race by 9 lengths to the smart Clan Des Obeaux. That form looks good enough for this race here and he looks like a live contender.

Selection : Chantry House - EW Tornado Flyer
