The Denman Chase Chase

A Grade 2 Class 1 Steeplechase

A Grade 2 Steeplechase for 5 year olds and up over 2 miles 7 furlongs 86yards at Newbury Racecourse

Sponsored by Betfair

The Denman Chase was origanally called the AON Chase after its sponsor.

In 2012 it was renamed by the new sponsor Betfair and renamed the Denman Chase in honour of Denman, who won the race in 2008 and also won 2 Hennessy Gold Cups at Newbury.

The race is seen as a trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup.

The 2016_Denman_Chase

An interesting race with quite a few good horses that have been out of form lately taking part.

Ballynagour fits this bill. He was the winner of the Byrne Group Plate (A Handicap Chase) Grade 3 at the 2014 festival and was a very good winner but his form since has not quite made the grade however he is coming down in class and this may be what he needs.

Rocky Creek is the same. He looked as if he was going to the top but has always found a few too good for him in a race. He was 2nd in a Hennessy so he has the class to win this if he runs up to something like his best form. He also has an entry in the Gold Cup in a few weeks.

Houblon Des Obeaux rarely runs a bad race and is well exposed. He looks better with Aiden Coleman on board and that could rejuvenate a bit of his old form.

The Giant Bolster could be just on one of his best days but he does seem to keep them for the festival. He may well keep his best for that Gold cup in a few weekís time.

1 10P-2P Rocky Creek 10 11-6 Paul Nicholls Sam Twiston-Davies 158
A 10 year old bay gelding trained by Paul Nicholls. A real good novice who although has not found winning easy is consistently a good runner in his races. He was second in the 2013 Hennessy at this course behind the smart Triolo DíAlene and is also a winner of the Grade 3 BetBright chase at Kempton. He has not been in good form lately but is one of more classy runners today.

2 P-77UP Splash Of Ginge 8 11-6 Nigel Twiston-Davies Ryan Hatch 141
An 8 year old bay gelding trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies. Looked to be shaping up into a nice horse two seasons ago but has been a little disappointing lately. After a reasonable run in the Paddy Power at Cheltenhamís November meeting he has been disappointing and is probably best watched today.

3 PP-P1F Bob Ford35 9 11-4 Rebecca Curtis20 Nico De Boinville 142
A nine year old bay gelding trained by Rebecca Curtis. A really nice horse on his day but he either goes really well of gives up and gets pulled up. He fell on his last outing in the Welsh National at Chepstow but did get until the 4th last. With his last 5 runs being PP-P1F he canít be recommended with any confidence today

4 F1535P Ballynagour 10 11-0 David Pipe Tom Scudamore 159
A 10 year old bay gelding trained by David Pipe. A nice horse who has a liking for soft ground. He has been running in Grade 1 races and takes a step down in class today. Must be respected and should not be overlooked.

5 F-9984 Houblon Des Obeaux 9 11-0 Venetia Williams Aiden Coleman 146
A nine year old bay gelding trained by Venetia Williams. A good horse who has done himself no favours with the handicapper by running well in his races. A French import who has a reputation for loving soft ground however 4 of his wins have been on good to soft with another on good ground. Although it has been a while since he has won he is ridden today by Aiden Coleman a jockey who he seems to get on well with. Not without a chance today.

6 5-0458 Midnight Appeal 11 11-0 Sophie Leech Richie McLernon 127
An 11 year old bay gelding trained by Sophie Leech. A well exposed horse who looks not up to this class of race and would be a surprise winner.

7 P-F794 The Giant Bolster 11 11-0 David Bridgwater Jake Hodson 139
An 11 year old bay gelding trained by David Bridgwater. Was a surprise second in the 2012 Gold cup at massive odds and seems to run many pounds better at that course than anywhere else. Has a touch of class and is a proper stayer. Should this be run at a crazy pace then he would be staying on passing burnt out horses but is difficult to see him winning this contest although he should run in to a place.

PU Bob Ford (IRE) 10/1 9 11-4 h Rebecca Curtis Nico de Boinville
PU Ballynagour (IRE) 3/1 10 11-0 ht David Pipe Tom Scudamore

A good race today that saw Houblon Des Obeaux bouncing back to great form. He was well placed throughout the race and at the 12th fence took the race but the scruff of the neck. He took the lead and just extended his lead until the end of the race where he won by 28 lengths and was easing down.
This was his first run in cheek pieces. His trainer states that connections feel that he does not show his best at Cheltenham and therefore will not have an entry in the Festival.

The second horse The Giant Bolster stayed with the pack and stayed on at one pace where he took second position and kept it until the end.
A run in The Gold cup seems assured.

Splash of Ginge ran his race and set of in the lead but could not really live with the winner when the chips were down.
The Grand National is his seasons target.

The race Favourite Rock Creek was up with the leaders but finished weakly.
His first run of the season is usually his worse and he often comes on a lot for his first run. Although the stable had to rush his performance he is sure to come on a lot for this effort. He has entries in The Gold Cup and the BetBright Chase on the 27th of this month.

Midnight Appeal, Bob Ford and Ballynagour did not finish.
