The Epsom Derby regarded by many as the greatest flat race in the world has been run since 1780. It is a crucial part of the five english classic races in the UK, it is run at Epsom Downs racecourse in early June.

The Derby was first thought of after the inaugural running of another of the classics, The Oaks Stakes in 1779.
When it was confirmed that another race was to be created itf was agreed that the race would be named after the host of the celebration The 12th Earl of Derby.

The uniqueness of the Epsom Downs racecourse means that a horse must be well balanced as the course has undulations which can leave a horse unsettled and disturbed and subsequently left behind. The race also requires the horse to have good stamina and also must have the speed to finish well in this very fast run race.

A great race in prospect today with the best bred horse in the race Australia heading the market. Would be disappointing I am sure for connections if this long-time favourite does not deliver the goods today. The horse has been odds-on in the market and now on the morning of the race is the best price for a while. Sure to shorten up before the race.

Geoffrey Chaucer looks and interesting runner from the same stable who ran well in the Dante and will be looking to improve at this more suitable distance.

Godolphin run True Story a fine colt with good form and could make the step up today.

Only unbeaten horse in the race Western Hymn looks a lively outsider from yesterdays winning Oaks stable of john Gosden.

. NUMBER DRAW FORM NAME AGE WEIGHT TRAINER JOCKEY

Qata_ Racing_Limited 1 3 3-12 Arod 3 9-0 Peter Chapple-Hyam Jamie Spencer
A bay colt whose sire was unbeaten in 5 runs over 7 furlongs, he has stamina on his dams side over 12 furlongs.
He was third over a mile on standard ground in his first run but was a good 5 lengths winner when stepped up to a mile and 2 furlongs.
Ran once this season in the Dante and put up a good performance when second behind The Grey Gatsby and he was staying on at the finish suggesting the extra two furlongs may be a help today.

1 win from 3 starts at 10 furlongs on good ground.

 Smith/Mrs J Magnier/M Tabor/T Ah Khing 2 12 211-3 Australia 3 9-0 A P OŽBrien Joseph O'Brien
A chestnut colt out of the impressive Galileo who won this race back in 2001. His mother Ouija Board was the winner of the fillies version of this race, The Oaks in 2004.
No horse better bred in the race today and should start at fairly short odds. A worthy favourite who looks to have everything in his favour here today despite a disappointing run last time out when only third in the 2000 Guineas. The extra distance here and the course should be more to his liking. A good run expected today.

H H Aga Khan 3 6 1-31d Ebanoran 3 9-0 John M Oxx D. McDonogh
A bay colt whose sire was a speed specialist winning 4 times over 5 and 6 furlongs. His stamina should come from his dam who was a winner over 15 furlongs.
He won his maiden over 7 furlongs by only a head, but started this season over a mile in the Leopardstown 2000 Guineas finishing third.
In his last race again a win by a head over the smart Fascinating Rock, however he lost the race in the steward’s room due to a bump in racing.
Will need to improve and has a chance of finishing in the frame but there are one or two others that may have more appeal.

1 win from 3 starts over 7 furlongs on good ground. (1 disqualified win over 10 furlongs on soft ground).

Newtown Anner Stud Farm Ltd 4 15 5-111 Fascinating Rock 3 9-0 D K Weld P. Smullen
A bay colt whose sire won 6 times at 5 or 6 furlongs and whose dam won twice over a mile.
A 3 times winner at this distance and a horse that seems to like soft or very soft ground and should we get plenty of rain this would be in his favour.
Unbeaten in 3 starts this season taking in 2 Group 3 races with the most recent win when getting the race from the disqualified Ebanoran.
His connections are very pleased with his preparation and he could run a big race.

3 wins from 4 starts on ground ranging from soft through to heavy and at a distance of 10 furlongs.

Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith 5 7 11-3 Geoffrey Chaucer 3 9-0 A P OŽBrien R.Moore
A bay colt whose sire won up to a distance of 14 furlongs. His dam ran well in many group races in the USA without winning.
He won his maiden over a mile in good fashion last season and returned to winning ways in September winning a Group 2 at the Curragh. Most recent run was a reasonable third in the Dante behind Ebanoran and Fascinating Rock. He could be better than that bare form suggests especially now he is stepping up in trip. He has not got the stable's main jockey as he will be riding the favourite but will be a really good ride for another top jockey.

2 wins over 3 starts at 8 furlongs on ground good to firm and good.

Weston Brook Farm Bromfield & Whitaker 6 5 51-2 Impulsive Moment 3 9-0 Andrew Balding D. Probert
A chestnut colt out of Derby winning Galileo and whose dam won over 9 furlongs.
This horse is another who could be better than his bare form but will need to improve on his Group 3 second at Sandown over this distance on soft ground. Would be a surprise winner but could make the frame.

1 win from 3 starts over 1 mile on standard all-weather ground.

Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor 7 16 135-51 Kingfisher 3 9-0 A P OŽBrien C. O'Donoghue
Another son of Galileo whose dam was speedy over a mile. 1 of the 4 horses from Aidan O'Brien's yard and perhaps the least fancied. His best performance in 6 previous runs was his last over this trip at Chester when winning a listed race.
Another who would be a surprise winner but could just run into a place.

2 wins from 6 starts on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 10 furlongs.

Paul Smith 8 2 111-8 Kingston Hill 3 9-0 Roger Varian A. Atzeni
A really nice grey colt whose sire had winning form over 11 furlongs and whose dam also won over 11 furlongs.
He was unbeaten including in a Group 1 race until he ran in the 2000 Guineas. He finished 8th that day but his trainer felt that he missed the break and did himself no favours and expects a better run in this race.
Clearly a good horse over a mile and breeding suggests he should get further. This horse could have a live chance today.

3 wins from 4 starts on ground ranging from good to soft through to soft and up to a distance of 1 mile.

Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor & Derrick Smith 9 14 21-1 Orchestra 3 9-0 A P OŽBrien S. Heffernan
Another bay colt out of Galileo and whose dam ran between 8 furlongs and 10 furlongs without winning.
A winner of the Chester vase over 12 furlongs on last run and who comes here today in good form. Everything in his previous two runs suggested that he might get further and the Chester vase win was a comfortable win. Taking a hike today in class but who knows?

2 wins from 3 starts on ground ranging from good through to soft add up to a distance of 12 furlon
gs.

Abdulla Al Mansoori 10 10 321-1 Our Channel 3 9-0 William Haggas S. De Sousa
A chestnut gelding whose sire was a winner up to 12 furlongs. His dam was a winner over 14 furlongs. A really nice horse whose form prior to his last run would have given him no chance at all. However his last run was over course and distance on 23 April where he was a good winner in a competitive conditions race. Has shown a liking for the course and that is a positive but he will need to improve considerably to be involved in the finish today.

2 wins from 4 starts on ground ranging from good to firm through to good to soft and up to a distance of 10 furlongs.

Godolphin 11 4 110-31 Pinzolo 3 9-0 Charlie Appleby J. Doyle
A bay colt whose sire was a winner over 12 furlongs and whose dam did the same.
A good horse with listed wins and his best race was over 10 furlongs at Newmarket on his last run. A 2 length winner that day but in a race a long way below this class. He could struggle today.

3 wins from 5 starts on ground ranging from good to firm through to soft and up to a distance of 10 furlongs.

The Hon R J Arculli 12 8 221-46 Red Galileo 3 9-0 Ed Dunlop O. Murphy
A bay colt whose sire won up to a distance of 8 furlongs and whose dam a daughter of Galileo won over 12 furlongs.
Although this is a nice horse there is nothing in his previous form to suggest that he can improve enough to win this race.

1 win from 6 starts on standard ground at 1 mile.

HRH Princess Haya Of Jordan 13 11 312 Romsdal 3 9-0 John Gosden R. Hughes
A chestnut colt whose sire won over 10 furlongs and whose dam run without winning over 10 furlongs plus.
A good horse who has been supplemented for the race at considerable cost (Ł75,000) presumably on his improved performance when second, by only a nose, in the Chester Vase behind Orchestra.
A good run clearly expected but a lot of improvement would need to come, that said he is from champion trainer John Gosden's yard and they have good horses to measure him against.

1 win from 3 starts at Kempton on standard ground over 11 furlongs.

K Abdullah Non RunnerNon Runner 418-21 Snow Sky 3 9-0 Sir Michael Stoute Non Runner
A bay colt who sire won over 12 furlongs and whose dam won over 14 furlongs.
A nice colt whose form so far does not suggest he would be good enough to win this race. His best run perhaps was in the Lingfield Derby trial a listed race over 11 furlongs on good ground. Not without a chance but does not seem consistent enough to better some of the smart opponents he will be up against today.

2 wins from 6 starts on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 11 furlongs.

Godolphin 14 9 421-13 Sudden Wonder 3 9-0 Charlie Appleby K. Manning
A chestnut colt out of the Godolphin yard whose sire was a winner over 12 furlongs and whose dam won at 10 furlongs.
Although a good horse nothing to suggest in his past form that he could win this race and will find it difficult to get placed.

2 wins from 5 starts on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 10 furlongs.

Godolphin 15 13 21-13 True Story 3 9-0 Saeed bin Suroor K. Fallon
A bay colt whose sire won up to a distance of 12 furlongs from an unraced dam.
A horse that has been getting better the more he runs and took a considerable step up in class when third in the Dante stakes, a Group 2 at York.
He was an impressive 7 lengths winner at Newmarket in April.
A horse that could be better than his bare form and has place claims.

2 wins from 4 starts on ground ranging from good through to good to firm and up to a distance of 9 furlongs.

RJH Geffen and Rachel Hood 16 13 1-11 Western Hymn 3 9-0 John Gosden W. Buick
An unbeaten bay colt whose sire was a winner over 12 furlongs and whose dam won over 7 furlongs.
A really good horse who has stepped up and who has won in improving style on every start. The best of these was in his last run when he won the Group 3 bet365 classic trial at Sandown Park over 10 furlongs.
He will need to improve on that but surely will have some improvement to come and looks to have a really good chance of making the frame and who knows maybe winning.

3 wins from 3 starts on ground ranging from good to soft through to soft and up to a distance of 10 furlongs.
