The Epsom Derby regarded by many as the greatest flat race in the world has been run since 1780. It is a crucial part of the five english classic races in the UK, it is run at Epsom Downs racecourse in early June.
The Derby was first thought of after the inaugural running of another of the classics, The Oaks Stakes in 1779.
When it was confirmed that another race was to be created itf was agreed that the race would be named after the host of the celebration The 12th Earl of Derby.
The uniqueness of the Epsom Downs racecourse means that a horse must be well balanced as the course has undulations which can leave a horse unsettled and disturbed and subsequently left behind. The race also requires the horse to have good stamina and also must have the speed to finish well in this very fast run race.
an impressive maiden win last season has been followed up by two improving runs this season. Third in the Craven stakes behind Eminent. And then second in the Dante behind Permian. The form is probably not good enough to win this race however.
Has been running on the dirt in Medan without much success. A high-class horse who put his best foot forward when winning the Lingfield Derby trial. I believe this is a crucial race even though many really good pundits have been unimpressed by this. The horse gave a good beating to one of his rivals today, Glencadam Glory. He was also giving 5 pounds the second and third. I think that was a good run and put him in with a good chance here today.
A winner of a Group 2 in Ireland over 1 mile last season. Form since then does not look good enough to worry the main contenders here.
Cliffs of Moher.
Likely to start favourite today, or at least vying for favourite. He was a very smart winner of his maiden to the end of last year and was tried in the Dee stakes at Chester over 1 mile 2 furlongs where he finished well on top at the finish. That was a good run but Chester is a funny sort of course, still has something to prove, but could be a very good horse.
The most fancied of the John Gosden horses in the race. He comes year on the back of a real workmanlike win in the Derby trial held here at this course back in April. Personally, I don’t think he was impressive that day and only beat what seemingly was an unfancied horse today Permian by only a short head. Has the same connections and jockey as Golden Horn who won two years ago. A good horse with a good chance, but not an outstanding chance.
An exceptional good win in a handicap at Windsor back on 15 May. But that was a handicap, he would have to improve greatly to take any place here you would imagine. Unlikely winner.
A workmanlike win in the Derby trial at Leopardstown but that doesn’t look like Derby winning form to me. Would be a surprise winner.
An unexposed horse with only one previous run when he was all out winner in a maiden at Newbury on May 19. Surely open to some good improvement and there will be much worse value 20/1 shots.
An impressive winner of the Craven stakes at Newmarket back in April puts the horse on a good level. But he was a bit disappointing in the 2000 Guineas. He was keen in the race and is another that is open to some improvement. Would not be a surprise to see him make the frame or win the race.
Second behind best solution in the Lingfield Derby, 3 ¼ lengths behind receiving 5 pounds. This suggests he should have little chance today.
Supplemented for the race after his Goodwood win back on 26 May. He was a good winner that day, but that form doesn’t look up to Derby standard.
Has only so far been running maidens and looks unlikely to trouble the field here today.
Winner of the Dante stakes at York shows that he has a little class, but I worry that, that race form does not look great. Not without a chance but there are others with better.
Won a group 3 at Leopardstown in workmanlike style but that form doesn’t look good enough for here today. Would be a surprise winner.
A nice enough improving sort but not really proven beyond a mile so the distance would be a worry, and perhaps not good enough.
On all known form, just does not look good enough.
Chester vase winner in good style. He was the pick of four horses from the same stable that day. Does not really look up to this class and will have to improve quite a bit take part in the finish year. Not impossible to see make the frame however.
Wings of Eagles.
A nice enough horse but nothing in his form to suggest that he might win here. Would be a surprise winner.
Running for charity, the best he can hope for is to keep out of trouble while the others go past.

Today’s winner Wings of Eagle was hampered near the start of the race and was in rear for a long way. He made incredible strides a furlong from home and stayed on well to take lead near the finish.
Cliffs of Moher was held up and well-paced. Took lead from strong run 1 furlong out but was caught on the line.
Cracksman the favourite, ran a good race throughout. He kept on well but just lost out to take 3rd.
Eminent ran well throughout the race and finished with every chance but could not get to leaders. Finished 4th.
5th place went to Benbati. Good run and stayed on to steal 5th on line.
