Epsom Downs

A Group 1 Class 1 "Classic Race" for Colts and Fillies 3YO

The Epsom Derby regarded by many as the greatest flat race in the world has been run since 1780. It is a crucial part of the five english classic races in the UK, it is run at Epsom Downs racecourse in early June.

The Derby was first thought of after the inaugural running of another of the classics, The Oaks Stakes in 1779.
When it was confirmed that another race was to be created itf was agreed that the race would be named after the host of the celebration The 12th Earl of Derby.

The uniqueness of the Epsom Downs racecourse means that a horse must be well balanced as the course has undulations which can leave a horse unsettled and disturbed and subsequently left behind. The race also requires the horse to have good stamina and also must have the speed to finish well in this very fast run race.

Amharan Na Bhfiann Both maiden runs poor. Looks to have little chance.

Emissary Good second at Goodwood but much more needed here.

English King. Good win in the Derby Trial at Lingfield. Will have Frankie Dettori on board. Will be well backed and has a good chance. Should be in the shakeup at the end.

Gold Maze. 6th in Irish Derby but connections need to be respected. Without a win yet though. Looks to have it all to do.

Highland Chief. Good handicap win last time but was found wanting in Group race. More required.

Kameko 2000 Guineas winner and a live contender.

Kalifa Sat is a listed winner but improvement needed today.

Max Vega Newmarket Group 3 winner Should stay and a good run expected.

Mogul. Could only manage 4th at Royal Ascot but is a group 2 winner. Should come on a fair bit for last run and better expected.

Mohican Heights. Beaten fair and square by Pyledriver at Ascot. Difficult to see form overturned.

Mythical. Maiden winner but found wanting since. Unlikely to feature in the finish.

Pyledriver. Good win at Royal Ascot. Good run expected.

Russian Emperor Really good win in Ascot Group 3 A good chance at making the frame.

Serpentine. Surprising Group race win last time out. Improving but will need to.

Vatican City. Good 2nd in Irish 2000 Guineas. Should be respected.

Worthily. Won only previous maiden run. Something of an unknown from a top stable? May well have an E/W chance.

Selection Mogul NB Kameko
