Aintree racecourse

The Worlds Greatest Steeplechase over 4 miles 2 furlongs and 74 yards.

The Grand National or the worlds greatest steeplechase as it is often referred to as is a horse race run over steeplechase fences at Aintree racecourse in Liverpool..
The distance run in this race is 4 miles 2 furlongs and 74 yards is the longest race run in the UK today.
This race is a unique test or horse and rider and the 30 fences that are jumped are a real test of bravery. Unlike most racecourses in the uk the fences are varied in height, width and depth and also the landing side on many of the fences is lower than the take off side and therefore do not offer a view of the landing to the horse.
There are 16 fences and 14 of then are jumped twice, the exceptions being the water and The Chair jumps. This make a total of 30 jumps to be made.

Bristol De Mai. Top class chaser. Loves some cut in the ground and thought of as something of a Haydock Specialist. Haydock is perhaps the closest racecourse to Aintree in its fences. He has top weight to burden him but is a big chaser and should carry the weight, but this is a long way. It will be disappointing if he does not put up a good show in the race and is likely to make the frame if he completes. Has a chance.

Chris's Dream. Good enough to run in a Gold Cup but seems to be out of form this season. Would need a return to form and some improvement to win today.

Yala Enki. Good old fashioned long-distance chaser. Will love the distance. Fell here at the first in the Becher but generally a good jumper. Has been placed in three Welsh Nationals. Well exposed and missed Cheltenham with this race in mind. Should go well at a big price.

Ballyoptic. Was second in the Scottish National a few years ago but looks a shadow of himself lately

Definitely Red. well exposed and could run well but he is not as good as he once was.

Lake View Lad. Nice horse but never really lived up what he showed in early form. Fell in 2019 renewal and has been out of form. Would be a surprise winner.

Burrows Saint. A nice chaser who has not won this season despite putting up good performances. Stays 3 miles well and likes soft ground but is not reliant on it. 2nd in Bobbyjo Chase at Fairyhouse behind Acapella Bourgeois will have put him spot-on for the race.

Magic of Light. Well down the field in the mares race at the festival and whose longest winning trip is just short of 3 miles, however, that only tells part of the story. She ran really well and finished 2nd in the 2019 running of this race and could be a dark horse?

Acapella Bourgeois. A good well exposed chaser. He has chased home the Twice Gold Cup winner Al Boum Photo in the last two New Years Day meeting in Ireland so he does have some class. Could run well.

Talkischeap. Finds form this time of year. He would not want it too soft. Improvement needed but only 9 and could achieve that. Interesting runner.

Tout Est Permis. Hasn't won for some time. easy to pass on this one.

Anibale Fly. Another well-exposed horse who put up his best performance when second in the 2019 Gold Cup. Last won in 2017 so it is a lot to ask him to win this one and others have more appeal.

Mister Malarky Good young horse who goes on any ground. Like flat racing tracks. has had a recent wind op and race well after. Chances.

Kimberlite Candy. A good horse who has got his act together last season and has continued to improve. Lightly raced but the last three runs stand out. 2 seconds in the Becher Chase over these fences and a great win in a 3m5f chase at Warwick. Not one to leave out of your calculations and should go well on the downside he can make jumping errors.

Any Second Now. Good Chaser who comes here on the back of a much-improved win in a Grade 2 race at Naven on his last start in good style but that was over 2miles so is probably best judged on his 2019 festival win in the Kim Muir over 3m2f. Has some class and a light weight. A great chance.

Balko Des Flos. A good horse but has not won since 2018 Has plenty to do here but is running off a low weight.

Alpha Des Obeaux. Well exposed and a good run in the Cross Country at the festival but still does not look good enough to win. Maybe place claims?

Ok Corral. Long break then poor comeback run at the festival. Difficult to see him making any influence here.

Takingrisks. 2019 Scottish national winner. A little long in the tooth now and despite a good win last time out would need to improve to win this.

Shattered Love. Although a point-to-point winner all wins under rules at around 2 and a half miles. Would be a surprise to see her win this.

Jett. Will be ridden by one of the best jockeys riding this course Sam Waley Cohen. Form has been poor this season and can therefore difficult to fancy.

Lord Du Mesnil. Good young long-distance stayer, A bit like Bristol De Mai in that he loves Haydock. Also a mud lover. Lots of rain would improve his chance of no end.

Potters Corner. Winner of last years "Virtual National" he is a real long-distance chaser. Winner of the 2019 Welsh National. A good 3rd in the Cross Country race in Cheltenham's November meeting shows his versatility. Would love cut in the ground and if he does not get run off his feet early on in the race has a real live chance here today.

Class Conti. Good chaser but has never won beyond 2m 5f Would need to show improvement to win this.

Milan Native. Lost his way lately with lacklustre runs. Soft ground would help.

Discoramma has come in for a lot of support in the betting with his price diminishing all the time. Has been running well but has not won a race since November 2018.

Vieux Lion Rouge. A great horse who loves the track. 7th in 2016, 6th in 2017, 9th 2018, 15th 2019. Looks like any chance has now passed him by, but who knows? Would be a popular winner!

Cloth Cap. Worthy favourite based on his win in the Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury back in November. He beat the field that day by 10 lengths with a good show of jumping and front running. He should get the trip as he was 3rd in the 2019 Scottish National and although he looked a little tired at the last he stayed on well and was going better than most at the line. No real chinks in his armour and with a little luck in running is sure to go well.

Cabaret Queen. Winner of the Kerry national seemingly gives him some sort of shout. Pulled up last time and would have to improve to be in the mix here.

Minellacelebration. Likes Aintree and does on any going. Good horse at 3miles+ 11 year old and well exposed better chance than odds would lead you to believe.

Canello. A good horse who has winning form at the course although not these fences. Young and improving. Acts on all going and has a good low racing weight. Chances.

The Long Mile. Could be a good chaser in the making but this is too early for this 7 year old.

Give me a Copper is a lightly raced 11-year-old. He was a winner of the Badger Beers chase at Wincanton in 2019 but his form does not look good enough for this race and he would be a surprise winner.

Farclas A nice young progressive horse. Ran well in the plate at the festival finishing second. Too young for the race as 7-year-olds have a very poor record and also has not won over a distance of 2m 3f Looks to have plenty on his plate here and can be overlooked.

Minella Times is a consistent horse coming from the in-form stable of Henry De Bromhead and will have the festivals leading rider Rachel Blackmore on board. A good handicapper and still improving but has not won a race further than 2m6f and therefore stamina could be a problem.

Sub Lieutenant. 12 years old. Well exposed and does not look good enough, but jumps really well and was second over these fences in the Topham in 2019. Will finish and could well be the Long Priced Placed horse.

Hogans Hight. Has won twice at this course by big distances and one of them over these fences. Ran well at the Festival over the cross country course. Not without a chance here off a light weight.

Double Shuffle. Good enough to be tried in the Gold Cup but does not win very often. Sure to run well for a long way but is unlikely to be good enough to win this.

Ami Desbois. Well exposed and often runs well but has not won for a long time.

Blaklion. Well exposed 12 year old. Poor recent form difficult to fancy bit stable has been in fine form this season.

Selection: Cloth Cap - Others of note Any Second Now, Potters Corner & Yala Enki
