The Hennessy Gold Cup is a grade 3 class one handicap chase for horses of 4 years and older.
The Hennessy Gold Cup is a handicap chase run at Newbury racecourse late November / early December. It has been run since 1957 and in all that time it has has continued sponsorship from the same company "Hennessy".
This is a race is an early season target for young horses on the way to better things. Won in the past twice by Gold Cup winner Denman and also Burrough Hill Lad. Many good horses have won this with the likes of Suny Bay, One Man and more recently Teeton Mill.
looks like we are in for another cracking renewal of the Hennessy Gold cup this year. The first horse worthy of comment is the long-time favourite Native River. Ridden today by the champion jockey, Richard Johnson this horse last season was a model of consistency. He was never out of the first three in any of his races winning three times. He was a winner at this meeting as a novice and so likes the course and goes well at this time of year. Looks a strong favourite with a good racing weight.
Another who is a model of consistency is the David pipe trained UnTemps Pour Tout. A seven-year-old bay gelding, he rarely runs a bad race and only has twice been out of the first three in his whole career and on those two occasions finished fourth. A young horse who likes to make the running and this is a race where horses generally don't win off the pace but win by going well throughout the race. A very strong contender.
Blaklion is the Nigel Twiston-Davies entry. Another horse with some really good form in his past and this seven-year-old bay gelding is climbing up the ratings nicely. He won the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival last season and ran a good race when fourth behind Irish Cavalier in the Charlie Hall Chase. That would have put him spot-on today and he is another strong contender.
Henri Parry Morgan is an eight-year-old bay gelding trained by Peter Bowen. He is well exposed for an eight-year-old and comes here without a previous run. Generally a good jumper but he can make a howler every now and again.
Last year's winner Smad Place has much more on his plate today. He comes here on top weight and will have to give a reasonable amount of weight to every single horse in the race. At nine years old he is a really good horse but is unlikely to be still improving. The weight could be the telling of his race today.
From right down the bottom end of the weights, the Nicky Henderson trained Vyta Du Roc is another interesting runner. This seven-year-old grey gelding is a previous winner of a grade 2 at Ascot and comes here in good form. This race can often go to an up-and-coming young horse from well down the weights.
A nine-year-old bay gelding trained by Colin Tizard, Theatre Guide is one of those horses that when he is good he is really good but he can sometimes put in a poor race. He is starting to climb in the ratings and has the benefit of one race this season when he was second in a listed race at Weatherby on October 28.
Vicente from the Paul Nicholls yard is another interesting young runner. He had a really good season last year going up in the ratings but kept his best run for the last race of the season where he won the Scottish Grand National. He ran really strongly that day and looked a real out and out stayer.
Holywell, a nine-year-old bay gelding trained by Jonjo O'Neill fell in the Grand National last season. It is likely that this will be his long term goal. He can often take one or two runs to get into his top form and seems to be a better runner post Christmas.
Houblon Des Obeaux is a really nice chaser especially when the ground is soft. He was ninth in this race last year but does have course form winning the Denman Chase, a grade 2 back in February. An interesting runner should the ground turn a really soft.
Triolo D'Alene is a previous winner of this race. He won the race back in 2013 but was pulled up in the following year's renewal. Has had some injury niggles but if he retains his class could be one of the dark horses here today. That said he probably has more in the against column than the for column currently.
Aubusson represents the Nick Williams yard. A seven-year-old bay gelding who spends much of his time racing in France. A nice horse whose chance is difficult to assess.
Coologue is an interesting runner from Charlie Longsdon. A young horse on the upgrade and who comes here with the benefit of a run and win in a handicap chase at Cheltenham back in October.
Carole's Destrier is an eight-year-old bay gelding who looks an out and out long-distance chaser. The pace of this race could just be too quick for him.
The eight-year-old bay gelding Regal Encore is the mount of Barry Geraghty. At the end of last season, he had three pulled up's, however, he did finish the season at the Punchestown Festival with a second in a handicap chase. There are others in the race with more appeal than this one today.
Local Show is a nice horse with course form. Lightly raced for an eight-year-old he comes here with his first run of the season but often runs well when fresh.
Hadrian's Approach has seemed to have lost his way in the last couple of seasons. Did seem to be a promising prospect but perhaps best watched today.
The bottom weight Upswing is a well-exposed horse and doesn't look good enough for this today.
