The Ladrokes Trophy Chase is a grade 3 class one handicap chase for horses of 4 years and older.
The Ladrokes Trophy Chase is a handicap chase run at Newbury racecourse late November / early December. It has been run since 1957 and up until 2017 it had continuous sponsorship from "Hennessy" but is now sponsored by Ladbrokes.
Well this is a good renewal of the race which was called the Hennessey but now the Ladbrokes Trophy Chase. Many of these will be trying to set out their path for the season today. With note, American’s seasonal debut will be watched by many as this horse looks to show his improvement continues. The Willie Mullins Total Recall will be well supported after his sparking seasonal debut win. Coneygree will be looking to but behind his last run. Well on to our guide.
We start with topweight Coneygree. A very smart chaser and Cheltenham Gold Cup winner in 2015. He remained unbeaten that year but due to injury only ran once in 2016. He was pulled up on his seasonal debut as he overreached at a fence. Can’t be ruled out even off topweight. ~
Whisper in owned by the man who also owns Ffos Las recourse. He is a good hurdler and is a good chaser if not quite yet up to his hurdle rating. He was second in two grade 1 novice chase events last season and started this season winning a two-runner graduation chase that would have put him spot on for this unfortunately also gave him a 4lb penalty. In good for and should run well.
American is a young 7-year-old chaser who has done nothing wrong in his races. Looked something special in his three wins from 3 runs last season. He is strongly fancied to be taking part in the finish today.
Carole’s Destrier ran well in this race last year but did not have a run after Boxing Day. Higher in ratings and a lot on his plate today.
Label Des Obeaux Had a good time last season but two lack lustre runs so far and hard to fancy, but improving sort.
Genie in Abottle is a highly thought of 6-year-old from Noel Meade’s stable. Two good runs this season but must improve and expected to do so. No Irish winner for a long time could this horse turn the tide?
Regal Encore once a good chaser but seems to have lost his way in the game. Would be a surprise winner.
A good early season last year and a good start in a handicap to start the season. Royal Vacation will be fit and ready for the run.
Pleasant Company is another Irish runner. 9th in the Grand National last season but improvement required here.
Total Recall could be one of the best of the Irish contenders. Won impressively in a listed race at Limerick for his new trainer in October.
Singlefarmpayment is my pick of the Irish contenders today. He ran a great race in the Ultima at the festival and looked good in his debut at Cheltenham in October where he was second giving weight to Cogry.
Third last season Double Ross has gone down in the ratings. Unseated rider at Sandown on last run. Looks an unlikely winner but stable in terrific form.
Present Man has done really well since being sent chasing and goes particularly well for up and coming jockey Bryony Frost. Could well be the pick of the pack today.
Missed Approach was second in the 4 miler at Cheltenham when first time cheekpieces. Ordinary runs since but first-time visor today and better expected.
Bigbadjohn winner of Grade 2 at Ascot but is now out of form and difficult to fancy.
Vyta Du Roc has struggles since novice races and his best performance since was at a distance a half mile longer than this. May struggle with pace, but has talent.
Paul Nicholls runners can’t be ignored and Braqueur D’Or has been running well. Will need a step up in form for this race but young and able.
Cogry won well last time out and stable in great form. Continued improvement needed and expected.
Potters Legend was a good novice but is finding things harder now.
Southfield Royal has lost his was and various headgear is being tried to restore old magic. Best watched toady.
Pilgrims Bay needs to improve a lot to win today.
Singlefarmpayment gets the Irish nod ahead of Genie in Abottle and Present Man looks the English value ahead of American.

A really good race today with Total Recall continuing his improving progress and was a good winner who got the better of Whisper in the closing stages. More improvement to come from the horse and it will be an interesting few month for the connections.
Whisper who can second in the race probably race the best race. He finished just a neck second giving the winner a tone in weight. A really good run from the horse and he must have a really good race in him this season.
Regal Encore finished 9 lengths 3rd and ran well throughout the race. He stayed on well at the end of the race.
Braqueur D’Or had an eye-catching run. Although he was 13 length behind the winner he ran a really good race for the youngest horse in the race. He tracked the leaders and made good progress.
Pilgrims Bay was held up and made good progress through the race. Stayed on for 5th 4 lengths behind the 4th
The rest of the finishers were all weakening at the end of the race.
There were 12 finishers with 47 lengths between 1st and last with 1 faller and 7 horses being pulled up.
Permission was given for SINGLEFARMPAYMENT to lead the parade, due to its known difficult behaviour.
SINGLEFARMPAYMENT, trained by Tom George, entered the Parade Ring after the signal to mount had been given. After being interviewed George was fined £140.
Having reviewed recordings of the false start, the Starters were satisfied that no riders should be reported for contravening the starting procedures.
Paul Townend, the rider of the winner, TOTAL RECALL (IRE), was suspended for 4 days for using his whip above the permitted level from the second last fence.
Following the race Noel Fehily reported that AMERICAN (FR), which was pulled up, jumped poorly throughout. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of the gelding, during routine testing, found it to have lost its left fore shoe and to have suffered an overreach on its left fore. Bryony Frost reported that PRESENT MAN (IRE), unplaced, was hampered by a faller at the third last fence.
