The_Race

The Oaks traditionally is the third of the five English classic flat races for three year old thoroughbred horses.

The race is open to fillies only and is run in late May or early June at Epsom Downs racecourse.

The race is run at the same meeting as another classic race which is the equivalent race for all three year olds which is The Derby

The_2013_Race

A good race in prospect today for this, the second of the fillies classics.

Secret Gesture looks like going off the favorite after putting in an exceptional eye catching performance in the Oak trial at Lingfield winning by 10 lengths from the rest of her field.

Epsom_Downs_the_home_of_the_Oaks

Moth from Aiden O'Brien's yard takes her chance after a good third in the 1000 Guineas and the form was franked when the second went on to win the Irish 1000 Guineas.

Sir Michael Stoute's unbeaten filly Liber Nauticus looks an interesting prospect after her good win in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes over a mile and two furlongs recently

Another of the Aiden O'Brien's horses Say looks another that might be something over this trip following a great 9 length win in Ireland when tried over 1 mile 2 furlongs.

So plenty of interest in the race and lots to digest this in this years crop of fillies.

M Kerr-Dineen,Lord Hambleden andamp; Partners 1 * 11 Banoffee 3 9-0 Hughie Morrison Kieren Fallon 93
A good unbeaten filly and recent winner of the Weatherby's Bank Cheshire Oaks, a listed race which is run at a distance just over 1 mile and three furlongs. She ran well in that race beating one of her rivals today Gertrude Versed by 1 1/4 lengths. She stayed on well and looks as if another half a furlong will suit. A good horse with a good chance.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good to soft through to good to firm and up to a distance of 11 furlongs. (Two wins from two starts):

Ms Rachel D S Hood 2 * 53-212 Gertrude Versed 3 9-0 John Gosden William Buick 89
A nice horse from the John Gosden yard who until recently did not look good enough to run in this race, however she put up an improved performance when second to Banoffe in the Cheshire Oaks recently. She will still have to improve a great deal to take part in the finish here today.
Only win was on slow ground on all-weather at a distance of 11 furlongs (one win from five starts).
Rating *.
Ballymacoll Stud 3 * 1-1 Liber Nauticus 3 9-0 Sir Michael Stoute Ryan Moore 99
A very smart unbeaten filly from Sir Michael Stoute’s yard. Recent winner of the Musidora stakes at York over 1 mile and two furlongs. She won the race impressively that day by one of the half lengths and was staying on at the end of the race. Looks as if she may put in a good run today and is one of the leading contenders.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to good to soft and up to a distance of 10 furlongs. (Two wins from two starts).
Rating * * * * *.
W J Gredley 4 * 1-3 Madame Defarge 3 9-0 Michael Bell Tom Queally 90
One win last season on heavy ground, but was a little disappointing on her only run this season when third in a listed race at Newmarket. She did not get a clear run that day and although she stayed on it was at one pace. She will need to improve a great deal on that running to take any part in the finish today.
Only win was on heavy ground and over 1 mile. (One win from two starts).
Rating: *.
Andrew Whitlock 5 * 4423-2 Miss You Too 3 9-0 David Simcock Ian Mongan 93
A nice horse who has been running consistently and one that seems to run better with some cut in the ground. Was second recently to Secret Gesture, at Lingfield in the Oaks trial. Has a lot to make up as she was 10 lengths behind the winner that day. Difficult to see her making the frame today.
Sole win was on good to soft ground over seven furlongs (one win from nine starts).
Rating: *.
Mrs John Magnier andamp; Michael Tabor andamp; Derrick Smith 6 * 53-13 Moth 3 9-0 A P OŽBrien 107
A good horse from the Aiden O'Brien yard, who ran a great race to be third in the 1000 Guineas behind Sky Lantern and Just the Judge who recently went on to win the Irish 1000 Guineas franking the form. This Galileo filly seems to get better with age and she should be there fighting out the finish.
Only win was on good ground at the distance of seven furlongs (one win from four starts).
Rating * * * *
Mrs Mary-Anne Parker 7 * 0112-0 Roz 3 9-0 Harry Dunlop Johnny Murtagh 104
An underrated filly who put in a below par performance in this season's 1000 Guineas. She was 10th that day and was struggling to keep up with the pace two furlongs from home. That is an undoubted worry however she is probably best assessed on her Group 1 run in the Shadwell fillies’ mile where she was second to the incredibly smart Certify at Newmarket at the end of last season. If you can overlook her 1000 Guineas run then she is an outstanding value at over 40 to 1 today. But she may not have trained on and is not certain to get this extended trip.
Wins have come on ground the ranging from good to firm through to soft add up to a distance of seven furlongs. (Two wins from five starts).

Derrick Smith andamp; Mrs John Magnier andamp; Michael Tabor 8 * 6-21 Say 3 9-0 A P OŽBrien 92
Another Galileo filly who completely outclassed her field when running in a maiden earlier this month. But that was her first try at 12 furlongs which will probably be her best distance on breeding. Still improving and of course something of an unknown in these higher class races but must be well thought of at home.
Only win was on yielding ground over 12 furlongs (one win from three starts).
Rating: * * *
Qatar Racing Ltd andamp; Newsells Park Stud 9 * 21-1 Secret Gesture 3 9-0 Ralph Beckett Jim Crowley 111
Very impressive winner of the Oaks trial at Lingfield earlier this month beating one of her rivals today Miss You Too by 10 lengths. An impressive filly who should be at her best at around this distance. A worthy favourite and sure to be there or thereabouts at the end of the race.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 11 furlongs (two wins from three starts).
Rating: * * * * *.
J L Rowsell andamp; M H Dixon 10 * 31-1 Talent 3 9-0 Ralph Beckett Richard Hughes 96
A good filly and winner of the Pretty Polly stakes at Newmarket earlier this month over 10 furlongs. Stayed on really well that day even though she was under pressure for some time. A good impressive horse, although not certain to get this distance on breeding.
Wins have come on ground ranging from good to firm through to soft and up to a distance of 10 furlongs (two wins from three starts).
Rating: * * *.
Lady Bamford 11 * 41-3 The Lark 3 9-0 Michael Bell Jamie Spencer 93
A nice horse who will have to improve considerably to be in with a chance of making the frame here on all known form.
Only win was on soft ground over 1 mile (one win from three starts).
