Betfred Monet´s Garden Old Roan Chase

A Grade 2 Limited Handicap

2 miles 4 Furlongs over Aintree Racecourse

The_Race

The race is a Grade 2 National Hunt chase and is a race for horses that are at least four years old. Although being the first big chase of the season and run at The Grand National racecourse it is not run over the national fences but is run on Aintree's "normal" Mildmay racecourse. The distance of the race is 2 miles 4 furlongs and there are 16 fences to be jumped.

Interesting race in prospect today with last year’s winner trying again. He went off the boil after the race last year but he certainly put up on of his best performances winning the race. ‘horses for courses’ is often stated in the racing game but the same is true of races, perhaps because of the timing of the race in the season or the condition of the course at that date? whatever the cause it is never a good idea to rule out the previous years winner in a race as could be seen by the horse named in this races title Monet’s Garden won the race on three occasions.
Uxizandre looks an interesting prospect on this course after he gave the very smart Oscar Whiskey a beating over this distance. A re-production of that form would see him right up there at the finish. The Alan King yard is also in great form at the moment.
Having to give weight all round Tom George's Module may be capable of just that but perhaps not at this distance? He was impressive last season at around 2 miles and was within 6 lengths of the top class Sire De Grugy in the Queen Mother at the festival. If he gets the trip or not his connections will set out their plan for the season after today.
Second behind Boston Bob in a Grade 1 over course and distance looks very good after Boston Bob went on to win another Grade 1 at Punchestown this form gives Rolling Aces a good chance here. From the Paul Nichols yard he will be fit and ready to show his best.

With half the field in with a chance here today we look to be in for a competitive race.

Race conditions: - For 4yo+ Weights highest weight 11st 10lb Minimum weight 10-4 Penalties after October 18th, a winner of a chase 4lb; no penalty to increase a horse's weight above 11st 10lb

1 2413-P Module 7 11-7 Tom George Paddy Brennan 164
"A nice bay gelding who progressed really well last year winning the Grade 2 Game Spirit chase at Newbury. He also put up a really good run in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Festival over 2 miles, finishing third just a neck behind Somersby who was 6 lengths behind the very smart winner Sire De Grugy.
Although most of his runs have been around the two-mile mark he has been tried twice at this distance. Once when finishing fourth in the 2013 Jewson novices Chase and at the start of last season when a game 4th in the Peterborough Chase.
Looks to have every chance today and any extra rain will increase his chances.

5 wins from 13 race starts (3 from 9 in chases) on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and half a furlong. "

2 62158- Wishfull Thinking 11 11-5 Philip Hobbs Richard Johnson 162
"A top class well exposed 11-year-old chestnut gelding from the Philip Hobbs yard. A previous course winner and ran well in last season's renewal but weakened at the end to finish only 6th.
He has won over this course and distance but that was back in 2011 and he will have to give away weight to most of the field here today. Has been rated higher than all of the field and if he retains his talent he could go well today at a good price.

10 wins from 32 starts (7 from 26 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs. "

3 11521- Uxizandre 6 11-1 Alan King Barry Geraghty 158
"A top class young and improving six-year-old chestnut gelding, this horse ended last season on a high at this course over this distance when beating the very smart Oscar Whiskey in the Grade 1 Manifesto novice chase.
Has to step up again today but certainly looks that type and usually runs well first time out.
A possible favourite for the race and no reason to suggest that he won't run well

5 wins from 12 starts (3 from 5 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs. "

4 1/537- Rajdhani Express 7 11-1 Nicky Henderson Mr. S.Waley-Cohen 158
"A good horse from the Nicky Henderson yard who will be running in the well-known colours of Robert Waley-Cohen. This seven-year-old brown gelding was looking full of promise in the season before last but did not quite improve enough last season when stepping up in grade.
A horse with plenty of promise will could well be competitive here today especially if there is any soft in the going.

5 wins from 20 starts (3 from 10 in chases) on ground ranging from soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and half a furlong. "

5 12P24- Rolling Aces 8 10-13 Paul Nicholls Nick Scholfield 156
"Second behind Boston Bob over course and distance at the Aintree National meeting this horse is another of the improving types this time from the Paul Nicholls stable.
Winner of a Grade 2 at Down Royal in November 2013. Surely he will improve and cut in the ground may help his cause.

4 wins from 13 starts (3 from 9 in chases) on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 6 furlongs. "

6 60903- Edgardo Sol 7 10-7 Emma Lavelle Aidan Coleman 150
"A nice young French import from the Emma Lavelle stable, this seven-year-old chestnut gelding has won two of his three wins so far at this course but at a distance of 2 miles. Since racing over a longer distance he has not looked quite so good.
An interesting runner was 7th in this race last year but didn't really make any impression and is difficult to fancy.

3 wins from 29 starts (2 from 9 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to good to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and half a furlong. "

7 1120-3 Mr Moonshine 10 10-5 Sue Smith Ryan Mania 148
"Good horse from Sue Smith's yard, this well exposed 10-year-old bay gelding ran well to be fourth in last season's event. Has been running at distances considerably longer than this and ran well in last season's Grand National to finish 15th. Most of his wins however have come at around this distance and although he may not have much more improvement to come, when he is on form he looks good. You just have to wonder if this might be a warm up for longer distance races such as the Becher at this course in early December and presumably his long-term aim will be another crack at the Grand National.

6 wins from 33 starts (4 from 21 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 2 furlongs. "

8 11FP6/ Bold Sir Brian 8 10-5 Lucinda Russell Peter Buchanan 148
"A winner of a listed race at Sandown over 3 miles may not be the sort of form that will be required here today over 2 1/2 miles. Although this horse has some form around this distance it is difficult to see him improving enough to win this race today. In his favour he does run well when fresh and could still be on the upgrade.

7 wins from 16 starts (5 from 11 in chases) on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and half a furlong. "

9 0755-7 Conquisto 9 10-3 Steve Gollings Brian Hughes 146
"Won this race last year in really good form staying on at the end of the race and never really looked in any doubt. After that race he was never the same again for the rest of the season when running in good races around the country.
Will he come out and Shine today? If there is a significant jockey booking that should not be ignored.

10 wins from 46 starts (4 from 13 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs. "

10 1-5414 Kie 6 10-2 Donald McCain Jason Maguire 145
"Consistent sort, this six-year-old bay gelding should have plenty of improvement to come and will have to improve a fair bit to be in with a chance of winning this race today.

6 wins from 27 starts (4 from 14 in chases) on ground ranging from good to firm through to good to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs. "

11 U11/8F Lucky William 10 10-2 Thomas Cooper Dougie Costello 145
"A well exposed 10-year-old chestnut gelding coming over from Ireland. Although he is a winner of a Grade 1novice chase at Punchestown he looks to have plenty on his plate here today and is difficult to fancy unless the this significant move in the betting market.

7 wins from 28 starts (4 from 13 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 3 furlongs. "

12 620U7- Viva Colonia 9 9-11 Brian Ellison Danny Cook 140
"A nine-year-old chestnut gelding whose only good run last season was actually in this race. He ran well for a while and was passing horses but although he stayed on he was not able to challenge the front two.
Maybe he will pull out another good run today and will make the frame again but he is running from out of the handicap and it will be difficult to see him repeating last season's good run.

7 wins from 49 starts (2 from 13 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and for furlongs. "
