A Class 1 Grade 3 Handicap Chase

A handicap chase over 2 miles 4 furlongs at Cheltenham racecourse

The_Race

The Paddy Power Gold Cup held at Cheltenham racecourse in early November is seen by many as the real start of the national hunt season.

Run since 1960 at Cheltenham over the old course this handicap chase is open to all horses over 4 years old.

Initially and perhaps best known as the Mackeson Gold Cup when it was sponsored by Mackeson, It has also been sponsored by Murphy's and Thomas Pink.

Run over a distance of 2 miles 5 furlongs and 110 yards this race attracts many high-class horses who run around this distance.

The_2014_Race

Great contest in prospect today.

Recent winner at this course John's Spirit looks to have a great chance doubling up even considering that he has to give weight today.

Oscay Whiskey shares top weight but must put his best foot forward today and stamp his credentials on the good races of the season.

Young Buywise looks an interesting prospect also. Lookng to continue his improvment.

Present View is another young pretender looking to make his mark and step up to this class and he is also a course and distance winner.

Given the sparkling form of the Hobbs / Johnson team at the moment the likable Persion Snow can't be left out of any reconing today.

With luck in running this open contest should set the mark for chasers around this distance for the season.

RACE CONDITIONS: - For 4yo+ Minimum weight 10-0 Penalties after November 2nd, a winner of a chase 5lb; no penalty to increase a horse's weight above 11st 12lb

NUMBER FORM NAME AGE WEIGHT TRAINER JOCKEY RATING

1 111F2- Oscar Whisky 9 11-10 Nicky Henderson Barry Geraghty 156
A nine-year-old bay gelding trained by Nicky Henderson.
This horse was a first class hurdler who was very consistent at around 2 1/2 miles.
He was the winner of the inaugural Welsh Champion hurdle at Foss Las racecourse and was a winner of the Aintree Hurdle, a Grade 1 over 2 miles and 4 furlongs which he won in 2011 and then again in 2012.
He was sent novice chasing and started really well when second in a Class 2 novice Chase at Cheltenham's November meeting. He then showed more improvement winning three times with the pinnacle perhaps in a Grade 1 novice Chase at Sandown.
His next race was in the JLT novice Chase at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival where he fell at the first fence. He made up a little for that when second in a Grade 1 novice Chase (manifesto) at the Aintree Festival a month later.
First time out this season but he is a horse that runs well first time out. Having won five times at Cheltenham he clearly has a liking for the course and loves cut in the ground so it should be perfect for him today. He does however have to give weight to some smart up-and-coming horses but would not be a surprise winner.

# Going preference # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance # Hurdle 2 miles 4 1/2 furlongs: Chase 2 miles 5 furlongs.
# previous win/run (to the end of last season) # hurdle 10/17: Chase 3/6.

2 1540-1 Johns Spirit 7 11-10 Jonjo OŽNeill Richie McLernon 156
A seven-year-old bay gelding trained by Jonjo O'Neill.
An average hurdler who is turning out to be quite a good chaser. He runs well at Cheltenham and is a three times winner at the course.
Winner of the Paddy Power Gold Cup Chase at the Cheltenham November meeting. He was fourth in the Byrne Group Plate at the Cheltenham Festival in 2014.
He has the benefit of one run under his belt this season where he was a very game winner of a handicap Chase over this course and distance on good to soft ground back on 18 October. A previous winner of the race and he should be spot on for this race today, is in good form and any movment in the betting market should not be ignored.

# Going preference # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to soft
# maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles and 1 furlong: Chase 2 miles 4 1/2 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) hurdle 2/7 Chase 4/14.

3 0903-2 Edgardo Sol 7 11-4 Emma Lavelle 150
A seven-year-old chestnut gelding trained by Emma Lavelle.
A reasonably good horse but one consistently finds one or two too good in his races.
A previous winner of the rRed Rum handicap Chase at Aintree, a race that he won in 2012.
He is fairly inconsistent and his form seems to vary.
He has run once this season where he put up a very good performance behind the very smart Wishful Thinking. He was second that day over 2 miles and 4 furlongs and although he had no chance with the winner the performance may suggest that he is now ready to step up in distance given that his previous wins have been around 2 miles.
Looks to have plenty on his plate here today.
# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through too good to soft.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles and half a furlong: Chase 2 miles.
# previous win/run (to the end of last season). # Hurdle 1/19: Chase 2/10.

4 2679-7 Champion Court 9 11-3 Martin Keighley Wayne Huchinson 149
A nine-year-old bay gelding trained by Martin Keighley.
A nice hurdler who has turned into quite a consistent chaser. A previous winner of a Grade 2 handicap Chase at Cheltenham.
He ran in this race last year but only finished seventh and looked to be weakening at the end of the race. He has run once this season so far in the same race one by John's Spirit and he was almost 20 lengths behind the winner that day. Difficult to see him turning around that sort of form with this horse only a month later.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through too good to soft.
# Minimum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles and 5 furlongs: Chase 2 miles and 5 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season). # Hurdle 3/20: Chase 3/19.

5 1PB/1- Kapga De Cerisy 6 11-2 Venetia Williams Aidan Coleman 148
A six-year-old chestnut gelding trained by Venetia Williams.
A French import where he won one of his nine races in his native France. He has certainly shown better form since moving to Venetia Williams and on his first outing in December 2011 he was fourth in the Coral future champions juvenile hurdle at Chepstow which is a Grade 1 hurdle and usually contested by good young three-year-olds.
Although he did show good improvement from his French form he seemed to have plateaued and it will be interesting to see if this young horse can still improve further.
Only one run last year and that was a good win in a handicap Chase at Sandown at around this time of year, obviously goes well when fresh but is coming here with a longer layoff than any of his rivals. Should still be improving and not without a chance of making the frame.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
# Minimum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles and half a furlong: Chase 2 miles and 4 1/2 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season). # Hurdle 2/10: Chase 3/8.

6 8F26B- Easter Meteor 8 11-2 David Pipe Tom Scudamore 148
An eight-year-old bay gelding trained by David Pipe.
Previously trained by Emma Lavelle up to the end of the 2013/2014 season. The horse that had been improving as a hurdler and seemed to take well to novice chasing, however he did seem to reach the top of his rating before changing stables. Presumably a change of stables has been tried to try and revitalise his improvement.
Tried in this race last year and looked to be going really well when he fell 2 from home. This is his first run for the year and the change of stable added to the fact that he ran well last year here gives him a much better chance in the race.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good to firm through to soft.
# Minimum winning distance. # Hurdle no hurdle wins: Chase 2 miles 3 1/2 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season). # Hurdle 0/4: Chase 3/13

7 O2831 Shanpallas 6 11-1 C Byrnes Davy Russell 147
A six-year-old bay gelding trained by C. Byrnes.
A decent hurdler who although made a winning start to his novice chasing seemed to struggle to improve from that first race. However he showed much improved form at Limerick in the Munster National handicap Chase, a 3 mile Grade A.
Has been running most of the summer with five previous runs from 30th July this year. Showed a marked improvement in his form when upped in distance to 3 miles coming third in the Kerry National and then winning the Munster National.
Looks as if 3 miles might be his distance and may struggle with the added in race speed of this race which is likely to be a fast run 2 1/2 mile event.
# Going preference. # All wins have come on good ground.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles a 4 furlongs: Chase 3 miles.
# Previous win/run brackets to the end of last season). # Hurdle 2/8: Chase 2/8.

8 2F08-0 Cantlow 9 11-1 Paul Webber Tom O'Brien 147
A nine-year-old bay gelding trained by Paul Webber.
A nice hurdler who was third in the 2012 Pertemps final hurdle at the Festival.
He has shown promise as a chaser and is a previous winner of the BET365 open handicap Chase at Newbury in 2013. He fell in a handicap Chase at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival and that knocked his form for the rest of that season culminating in an eighth place in the Irish National.
Only one run this season so far a disappointing race where he finished well down the field over 3 miles. He has not looked the same grade of horse running at distances over 3 miles and this return to a shorter distance might see some improvement today.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 3 miles: Chase 2 miles and 4 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) Hurdle 1/10: Chase 3/10.

9 1463-5 Eastlake 8 11-0 Jonjo OŽNeill Jason Maguire 146
An eight-year-old bay gelding trained by Jonjo O'Neill.
An average hurdler who won a few minor events at Hereford this horse has taken to chasing really well.
He had 13 runs in his novice year and now looks well exposed. He seems to act on any ground and looks really good around the 2 mile distance and it looks as if the connections are now keen to try him over further.
One run so far this season in Chepstow's October meeting where he was hampered four from home and then finished his race at one pace. He is a course winner and has that in his favour but may be best watched today.
# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good to firm through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles an 1 furlong: Chase 2 miles and 1 furlong.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) Hurdle 2/5: Chase 7/19.

10 1151-1 Buywise 7 11-0 Evan Williams Paul Moloney 146
A seven-year-old bay gelding from the Evan Williams yard.
A seemingly an impressive hurdler who came to life when tried over fences. A winner of four of his five chases in his novice season with his only defeat coming at the festival in that year (2014).
Single run this year so far was a pipe opener over 2 miles in a hurdle race. Where he had previously shown poor form over hurdles he was able to win this one. A really nice young chaser and a horse certainly on the improvement list. He certainly looks to have the right sort of profile for this race and should go well.
# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles: Chase 2 miles in 7 1/2 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) Hurdle 0/2: Chase 4/5 (one fall in Hunter Chase).

11 1211-2 Present View 6 10-12 Jamie Snowden Brendan Powell 144
A six-year-old bay gelding trained by Jamie Snowden.
A nice young hurdler whose form improved when he turned to chasing. He is an improving horse and won a really good race at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival winning a listed novice handicap Chase in good style. Young and improving and one to keep an eye on.
His only run this year was in a novice hurdle race where he went down by just a head the first two horses were well in front of the rest of the field. That was just a month ago and will put him spot on for this race. An exciting young chaser who is still improving and comes sure with every chance today.
# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good to soft through to soft.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle no hurdle wins: Chase 2 miles 6 1/2 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) # Hurdle 0/4: Chase 3/5 will stop

12 9520-5 Attaglance 8 10-11 Malcolm Jefferson 143
A nine-year-old bay gelding from the Malcolm Jefferson yard.
A reasonable hurdler who ended up finishing the 2011/2012 season winning two valuable handicap hurdles one at the Festival at Cheltenham and the other at the Festival at Aintree. Has run some reasonable chases that to the end of the 2013 2014 season is yet to win a Chase.
One single Chase run this season where he finished down the field in a Market Rasen listed race. Looks to have plenty on his plate you are today.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to good to soft.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles for a half furlongs.: Chase no winning chases.
# Previous

13 1532-7 Caid Du Berlais 5 10-11 Paul Nicholls Sam Twiston-Davies 143
A five-year-old bay gelding trained by Paul Nicholls.
A French import who has slowly been improving since joining the Paul Nicholls yard. He was second in the 2014 valuable handicap hurdle at Aintree (Grade 3).
Run once this season back in July but did not show any form, that was in Galway.
Will be fit and ready for the race today but it would seem there are others with better form.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles and 1 furlong: Chase 2 miles 3 1/2 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) # hurdle capitalise that 1/12: Chase 1/2.

14 2167-2 Persian Snow 8 10-9 Philip Hobbs Richard Johnson 141
An eight-year-old bay gelding trained by Philip Hobbs.
An average hurdler who has been steadily improving since turning to fences.
Runs reasonably well at around 2 1/2 furlongs and seems to like some cut in the ground.
Running out of the Philip Hobbs yard who are having marvellous start to this season. Three winners from the yard at this course yesterday and this horse showed good improvement coming second to the smart John's Spirit last time out in a handicap Chase at this course and distance on 18th October. A similar improvement could put him in the frame once again today.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles 4 1/2 furlongs: Chase 2 miles for a half furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) # hurdle 1/8: Chase 2/8.

15 11217- Indian Castle 6 10-8 Ian Williams Noel Fehily 140
A six-year-old bay gelding trained by Ian Williams.
A nice improving hurdler was taken really well to chasing.
A winner of a handicap Chase at Cheltenham in 2014 he looked the real goods on heavy ground looking really strong but then idled once in front. He then ran a below par run at the 2014 Festival but that perhaps could be explained as he made quite a blunder at the last which lost him his chances. Changed yards at the start of the 2014/2015 season.
No runs yet this season but will be fit first time out and won first time out last season. He is a course winner over 2 miles and 5 furlongs and would not be a surprise winner here today and I'm sure will be quite well fancied in the betting.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 3 miles and half a furlong: Chase 3 miles and 1 furlong.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) # Hurdle 2/3: Chase 2/4.

16 260-25 Cedre Bleu 7 10-7 Charlie Mann Gavin Sheehan 139
A seven-year-old bay gelding trained by Charlie Mann.
A nice hurdler who changed to chasing shortly after coming to this season from his native France. It was with the Paul Nicholls yard and moved to Charlie Mann at the start of the 2014/2015 season
One recent run was a poor performance and he would have to show a marked improvement in form to have any chance you are today.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles and half a furlong: Chase 2 miles 5 1/2 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) # Hurdle 1/4: Chase 3/12.

17 B20-19 Orpheus Valley 11 10-5 Thomas Gibney Mark Enright 137
A 11-year-old chestnut gelding trained by Thomas Gibney.
A horse with not many miles on the clock who suddenly shot to fame when winning the Guinness handicap Chase, a Grade A Chase at Punchestown.
Latest run on 3 August in Galway was a poor run and looks to have little chance you are today.
# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles 6 1/2 furlongs: Chase 2 miles and 5 furlongs.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season) # Hurdle 1/4: Chase 3/17.

18 51P-63 Ericht 8 10-5 Nicky Henderson Andrew Tinkler 137
An eight-year-old bay gelding trained by Nicky Henderson.
A winner of three of his five National Hunt flat races he also won a low Grade maiden hurdle. He has since run in and out of form on different types of races and it seems as if the connections can't quite make up their mind the best distance or type of race that this horse should run in. Difficult to assess but an interesting horse all the same.
Has run once since May and that was in a Cheltenham handicap Chase which was won by John Spirit and had Persian Snow second, and this horse third. That looked an improvement on his previous form and he is a very interesting runner here today from well down the weights. Another improvement may just need him into the frame.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good to soft through to soft.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle 2 miles and 5 furlongs: Chase 2 miles and 4 furlongs.
# Previous

19 F0-U44 King Massini 8 9-13 Evan Williams Adam Wedge 131
An eight-year-old bay gelding trained by Evan Williams.
An Irish point-to-point horse brought over to the Evan Williams yard in South Wales. This horse has been improving steadily.
An improving sort who has been running with some credit in races of much lower class than this and it would not be a surprise to see him struggle here today even off bottom weight.

# Going preference. # Wins have come on ground ranging from good through to heavy.
# Maximum winning distance. # Hurdle no hurdle wins: Chase 3 miles.
# Previous win/run (to the end of last season). # Hurdle 0/5: Chase 3/6.
