The_Race

The Paddy Power Gold Cup held at Cheltenham racecourse in early November is seen by many as the real start of the national hunt season.

Run since 1960 at Cheltenham over the old course this handicap chase is open to all horses over 4 years old.

Initially and perhaps best known as the Mackeson Gold Cup when it was sponsored by Mackeson, It has also been sponsored by Murphy's and Thomas Pink.

Run over a distance of 2 miles 5 furlongs and 110 yards this race attracts many high-class horses who run around this distance.

The_2015_Race

A really nice race this and perhaps we have a star in the making in the field today.

David Pipe send the smart Kings Palace here yoday and he will be strongly fancied as he has not done much wrong in his races so far and looks like one on the upgrade.

Paul Nicholls has two interesting runners the smart recent winner Sound Investment and the young Art Mautesque. Both look to have chances.

A race as competitive as ever and very little in the field has no chance.

RACE CONDITIONS: - For 4yo+ Minimum weight 10-0 Penalties after November 1st, a winner of a chase 5lb; no penalty to increase a horse's weight above 11st 12lb

NUMBER FORM NAME AGE WEIGHT TRAINER JOCKEY RATING

1 251-81 Sound Investment 7 11-12 Paul Nicholls Sam Twiston-Davies 159
A 7-year-old Bay gelding trained by Paul Nicholls.
A fine win in the recent Grade 2 Monet's Garden Old Roan Chase at Aintree shows that this horse comes here in great form today. He comes sure on top weight and a good performance would see him in the money.

7 wins from 20 starts (5 from 11 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs.

2 2653-P Johns Spirit 8 11-10 Jonjo OŽNeill Richie McLernon 157
An 8-year-old Bay gelding trained by Jonjo O'Neill.
Second in this race last year behind the smart Caid Du Berlais who put in the race of the season as far as he was concerned. John's Spirit generally speaking is a consistent sort of horse but he also did not get into winning ways after his initial win in a handicap chase at this course in October. However he had some fine runs in some top-class races. Certainly not without a chance today.

7 wins from 28 starts (for from 19 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles 4 1/2 furlongs.

3 1F-421 Irish Cavalier 6 11-9 Rebecca Curtis Paul Townend 156
A 6-year-old grey or Roan gelding trained by Rebecca Curtis.
A nice young improving horse who won an intermediate chase at Newton Abbot last month. Should be spot on now for this race and should run well.

6 wins from 15 starts (2 from 8 in chases) on ground ranging from good to soft through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles 5 furlongs.

4 211F-1 Oscar Rock 7 11-8 Malcolm Jefferson Brian Hughes 155
A 7-year-old Bay gelding trained by Malcolm Jefferson.
A really consistent horse and winner of the John Smith's novice hurdle at Kelso. He is another who has a win under his belt this season when at the end of September he won a handicap chase over 2 miles 5 furlongs at Market Rasen.
Will have to improve today to win this but is going the right way and has good recent form.

6 wins from 14 starts (3 from 5 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles 5 1/2 furlongs.

5 5421-1 Boondooma 8 11-7 Dr Richard Newland Will Kennedy 154
An 8-year-old Bay gelding trained by Dr Richard Newland.
A nice hurdler who was taken to chasing and who won a handicap chase on his last outing at this course. He did it well that day although it was 4 furlongs shorter than today's race. He is a winner over hurdles at this distance but in chases has been running at distances at around 2 miles. If he gets this trip, no reason to suggest that he shouldn't he will be a very interesting runner from a stable in form.

6 wins from 19 starts (2 from 4 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles 4 1/2 furlongs.

6 1116- Kings Palace 7 11-7 David Pipe Tom Scudamore 154
A 7-year-old Bay gelding trained by David Pipe.
Another really good is consistent sort who has plenty of wins in the locker. We'll probably come here well fancied as he runs really well around this distance and also likes this course having won 4 times here.
The David Pipe stable likes to target this early-season type of race. And he won this race in 2011 and his father who trained at the stable before him won this race 8 times. A really nice horse from good stable he must be respected and is likely to be 1 of the favorites.
7 wins from 11 starts (3 from 4 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong.

7 F491-1 Cocktails At Dawn 7 11-6 Nicky Henderson Nico de Boinville 153
A 7-year-old Bay gelding trained by Nicky Henderson.
Another fine progressive horse who comes sure on the back of all win at Chepstow back in early October.
Has a little to find today but is certainly going in the right direction and comes from a good stable. Would not be a surprise winner at all.

3 wins from 11 starts (2 from 6 in chases) on good ground.

8 UR60-2 Double Ross 9 11-6 Nigel Twiston-Davies Ryan Hatch 153
A 9-year-old chestnut gelding trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies.
A well exposed 9-year-old whose form has tailed off since he was third in the Charlie Hall Chase last season. Looks to be a bit of a character and actually refused to run in last year's King George VI Chase at Kempton's Christmas meeting. Run a poor race at the end of the season in the Ryanair chase. But started this season in good form when he was second in a Grade 3 chase at Ascot at the end of last month. The worry is that he made a few real mistakes in the race and would seem to have more ticks in the against column than in the for column.

5 wins from 34 starts (3 from 17 in chases on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs.

9 11-234 Cloud Creeper 8 11-3 Philip Hobbs Richard Jophnson 150
An 8-year-old Bay gelding trained by Philip Hobbs.
A really nice hurdler who took to chasing well but obviously at a lower Grade than today's race. His 2 recent runs however this season were below par efforts which suggests that he might have it all to do today.

4 wins from 20 starts (3 from 7 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles 5 furlongs.

10 041P-9 Next Sensation 8 11-3 Michael Scudamore Lian Treadwell 150
A Grade 3 course winner would suggest that this horse's chances are better than they actually are today. That race was at the Festival and he was a bit of a surprise winner. He went on to the Aintree Festival and was pulled up, probably feeling the effects of a tough race at Cheltenham.
He ran at this course back in October and he weakened towards the end of 2 mile race. Probably best watched today

4 wins from 18 starts (for from 14 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 1 furlong (point-to-point winner over 3 miles).

11 1P7P-7 Splash Of Ginge 7 11-2 Nigel Twiston-Davies Jamie Bargary 149
A 7-year-old Bay gelding trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies.
Tends to run either well or really poorly and his form seemed totally tail off after a win at this course over this distance last January.
Recent form poor and cannot really be fancied today.

4 wins from 21 starts (2 from 8 in chases) on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs.

12 5145-3 Buywise 8 11-1 Evan Williams Paul Moloney 148
An 8-year-old Bay gelding trained by Evan Williams.
A nice horse was progressing the right way he was third in the recent Monet’s Garden old Roan Chase. He is a horse that often seems to punch above his weight. Prefers really soft ground and that would be his advantage today if he gets rain soaked ground.

6 wins from 14 starts (for from 10 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles in 7 furlongs.

13 3P10F- Annacotty 7 11-0 Alan King Ian Popham 147
A 7-year-old Bay gelding trained by Alan King.
A nice hurdler who has turned into an even better chaser. 2 seasons ago he won the Kempton Christmas Feltham novice chase in really fine form leaving his field 10 lengths behind him on soft ground over 3 miles. He then sort of let himself down in the RSA chase at the Festival and since been tried of slightly shorter distances.
He won a good Grade 3 handicap chase at this course last January over this distance but then his form tailed off. His first run today and he might just be in need of it.

5 wins from 17 starts (3 from 13 in chases) on ground ranging from good to soft through to soft and up to a distance of 3 miles.

14 51-131 Art Mauresque 5 11-0 Paul Nicholls Nick Scholfield 147
A 5-year-old Bay gelding trained by Paul Nicholls.
A nice young horse who seems to have the same sort of profile is last year's winner from the same stable. He is a winner of a couple of chases and is the sort that rarely runs a bad race putting in good performances time after time. Must be respected and could easily make the frame and who knows win?

7 wins from 13 starts (for from 6 in chases) on ground ranging from good to firm through to heavy and up to a distance of 4 miles and half a furlong.

15 16-P5B Shanpallas 7 10-13 C Byrnes Barry Geraghty 146
A 7-year-old Bay gelding trained by C Byrnes.
An Irish raider and winner of the Munster national last season over 3 miles.
Run a good 6th in this race last year but strangely was unable to catch leading pack on the run in. Has been on the Go since June this year and his form has not been promising with a pulled up, fifth of 22 and a brought down. Perhaps another to be watched today.

4 wins from 21 starts (2 from 12 in chases) all on good ground.

16 1571B- Darna 9 10-12 Kim Bailey David Bass 145
A 9-year-old Bay gelding trained by Kim Bailey.
A 9-year-old horse with not many miles on the clock. He was a good hurdler and has taken to chases well. He won a Grade 3 at this course at the Cheltenham Festival over this distance so he has a lot going for him today. That of course would have been on the new course where as today they are riding on the old course.
Not without a chance on his best form but difficult to fancy.

7 wins from 17 starts (5 from 11 in chases) on ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs.

17 236-4P Present View 7 10-10 Jamie Snowden Brendan Powell 143
A 7-year-old Bay gelding trained by Jamie Snowden.
A past winner of valuable listed chase at the 2014 Cheltenham Festival. Has not been seen very much since then but is not managed to put his head in front since.

3 wins from 14 starts (3 from 8 in chases) on ground ranging from good to soft through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles 5 1/2 furlongs.

18 312U-8 Monetaire 9 10-8 David Pipe Connor O'Farrell 141
A 9-year-old Bay Brown gelding trained by David Pipe.
A French import of the type that this stable seems to do well with. Run 2 good races at the end of last season and was then second in a Grade 3 handicap chase at the Festival. He then unseated his rider in the Topham at Aintree, and then at the start of this season run in a valuable hurdle race at Punchestown where he was unspectacular but that should have put him spot on for this race.
This type of horse from this stable you can't rule it out completely.

3 runs from 36 starts (2 from 12 in chases) on ground ranging from soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs.

19 342U-P Bennys Mist 9 10-7 Venetia Williams Aiden Coleman 140
A 9-year-old Bay gelding trained by Venetia Williams.
A nice horse who needs very soft ground to show any real form. Should there be a deluge and the ground turns to heavy he would have a chance but on the expected good ground cannot be fancied even given that this stable is in sparkling form at the moment.

7 wins from 32 starts (5 from 23 in chases) all on heavy ground and up to a distance of 3 miles.

20 3134-0 Generous Ransom 7 10-7 Nick Gifford Daryl Jacob 140
A 7-year-old chestnut gelding trained by Nick Gifford.
A horse was best form was at this course over this distance when he won in January in a handicap chase a worry would be his recent run again at this course over this distance back in October where he really did run no sort of a race.

4 wins from 16 starts (2 from 7 in chases) on ground ranging from good to soft through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles 5 1/2 furlongs.
