The_2016_Race

A big field and the competitive field of horses take on what many see as the first major race of the National Hunt season.
Will start by taking a look at the very smart eight-year-old bay gelding More of That. Trained by Jonjo O'Neill. This horse has won seven of his nine races under rules and looks a real up-and-coming star. In March 2014 at the Cheltenham Festival, he pulled off a remarkable feat beating the very smart Irish-trained Annie Power in the world hurdle. Last season he made a good start to his chasing career winning two reasonable chases before finishing third at the festival in the RSA Chase behind the very smart Blacklion. He will start a worthy favourite but this it appears that in the past few years this race has gone to horses slightly younger than eight with only one 8-year-old winning the race since 2003.
The Paul Nicholls-trained As De Mee falls into the right age range at six years old and comes here on the upgrade. He's a good horse and is well exposed for a horse being so young. He has only won once in his nine chase starts but perhaps only now is starting to show the benefits of his experience. He did finish behind today's favourite More of That at this meeting last year. An interesting runner nevertheless
Another from the Jonjo O'Neill yard is the smart Taquin Du Seuil. He is a well-exposed gelding with some good form at around 2 1/2 miles. He can't really be strongly advised as his age puts on quite high in the weights which means he will have to give weight to the younger up-and-coming types that this race often goes to.
Another nine-year-old Village Vic probably falls into the same category. Perhaps the difference with Village Vic is he often seems to come in to form at around this time of year. He also has winning form at Cheltenham.
Buywise is another nine-year-old who has been quite successful as a hurdler but has found it difficult to win especially last season. He ran in the Grand National last season finishing 12th and presumably that will be his eventual seasonal target.
Bouvreuil is one of the youngest horses in the race at five-year-old on is a French import to the Paul Nicholls yard. He won a good novice Chase last year and is improving. Another interesting runner who is probably best watched today.
Aso from the Venetia Williams yard looks to have the right sort of profile for this race in that he is a young improving type. Ran with credit in much of his races last year and getting his head in front twice likes the soft ground and finished fifth in the Arkle in last season's Cheltenham Festival.
Frodon is a very interesting runner from the Paul Nicholls yard. Another of his French imports which he seems to do really well with. He was eighth in last season's triumph hurdle and when on to finish fifth in the handicap hurdle at Aintree. He has come out fighting this season with three wins on the bounce in small fields, although the last one in a three-runner event where the other two runners either fell or were pulled up. At four years old he probably doesn't have an experience as no four-year-old has ever won the race, having said that Nicholls did win it in 2014 with a five-year-old so who knows? A very interesting runner indeed.
Stiletto is a seven-year-old with not very many miles on the clock. He has moved to a new stable now from Paul Nicholls to Johnny Farrelly. An interesting sort but something of an unknown.
The top weight today is the good 10-year-old Ballynagour from the David pipe yard. He will have to give weight away to everybody today and looks to have plenty on his plate.
Another one of the handful of runners the Paul Nicholls trained Art Mauresque is a nice improving sort and has the benefit of a run, and a win in a handicap chase at Chepstow in October. He was not very fluent in his jumping that day and that might catch him out here.
The in-form stable of Colin Tizard runs Sizing Granite. He was a very good novice chaser but last season but he found it difficult to make his mark racing in better company. That said he was running in good races. He was pulled up in the Queen Mother Champion Chase but he did make a terrible mistake at the first fence and was pulled up early in the race. He put that behind him two weeks later when he went to Ireland and ran a really good second in a grade 2 chase, despite making mistakes again. A clear round may give him a chance but his tendency to hit a few fences makes him difficult to fancy.
Colin's other runner in the race is another sizing, this time it's Sizing Platinum. A nice eight-year-old bay gelding who put in some really good performances as a novice chaser but is another who found it more difficult when running against more experienced horses last season. He has been running through the summer and will be fit and healthy to take his chance but it does look like he has a bit on his plate today.
Tenor Nivernais trained by Venetia Williams needs soft ground really to show his best and if there is a complete deluge of rain you might start to see his price foll. Even at nine years old he is still on the upgrade but would be a surprise winner.
Double Shuffle trained by Tom George is a nice six-year-old bay gelding who was third in a handicap chase at the Festival back in March. He ran a good race behind Art Mauresque at Chepstow last month and that will put him spot on for this race today. Finished strongly in that race when lots of others were actually weakening. He has the profile of horses that often win this race one should go very well.
Vintage Vinnie trained by Rebecca Curtis is a seven-year-old bay gelding. He started the season in sparkling form with two wins the second being a listed handicap Chase at Market Rasen. He could only manage third in a four runner event at Newton Abbot last month however on genuine good ground. A bit of an enigma really but again one that fits the right sort of profile for this race.
Thomas crapper is a nine-year-old bay gelding trained by Robin Dicken and is plenty low enough in the weights for today's race he has been a little bit of an underachiever recently but that's probably because the handicapper has is Mark.
Potters Cross is a nine-year-old bay gelding who was rated in the mid 130's over hurdles. Should have more improvement to come over fences and started this campaign with a really good win in a handicap chase at Chepstow last month. He won well that day and had his field quite stretched out and not many of them were really weakening so he won on merit. Another interesting runner
Annacotty is an eight-year-old from the Alan King yard. Seems to have two ways of running either runs very well and wins or comes quite a way down the field. He could only manage 16th in the Festival last year but was running over 3 miles 1 furlong he has looked better coming back to the shorter distances and does look the type that needs genuine soft ground to show his best. Alans horses have been running quite well recently but the horse has plenty of weight for an eight-year-old in this race.
