The Queen Mother Champion Chase is a grade 1 Steeplechase.

The Champion chase is the most prestigious 2 mile steeplechase in the whole calendar and is run for the fastest steeplechasers over two miles and is the main event of the second day of the Cheltenham festival.

First Run in 1959 this is the race that all top class two mile chasers are aimed at all season.

The race is open to all horses of the age 5 years and over.

Well here we are on day 2 of the festival and probably one of the most fancied horses of the whole meeting will be running in the two-mile Queen Mother Champion Chase.

We must start with one of the best horses in training at the moment the mighty Douvan. After his first maiden hurdle race as a four-year-old where he finished second this bay gelding has won his subsequent 14 races. Not only has he won these races but he's won most of them by large distances. He is so good that he almost always goes off at odds-on these days, in fact in his last race he beat a small field of 4 by 6.5 lengths easing down at the very narrow odds of 1 to 14.

You really can't put enough superlatives ahead of this horse everything he does is so good. He is fast and low at his fences and that means that he loses no time or distance in the air.

There are no chinks in his armour and he is expected to win this race very easily.

We do however have to consider others in the race and perhaps the best of these is the Colin Tizzard trained Fox Norton. A really progressive horse who was doing really well for trainer Neil Mulholland before transferring to Colin Tizzard for his last two runs. These two runs of been very good, the first was in a two-mile chase at Cheltenham where he beat a good grade 2 field by over nine lengths and most recently at Newbury where he finished 2nd to the incredibly smart Altior who won the Arkle Chase here yesterday. Good form and a worthy second favourite.

God's Own is trained by Tom George and is another pretty consistent chaser. Unfortunately, in this division there has been some real superstars in the past years and in 2015 he came up against one in the form of Un De Sceaux in the Arkle and he finished a good 2nd to him. Last season in this race he came up against Sprinter Sacre and finished a reasonable fourth in the race. A good horse who has the chance of making the frame.

The Henry de Bromhead trained Special Tiara is another good chaser. He has been at the festival for the past couple of years and in 2014 was 6th behind Sire De Grugy, in 2015 he was third behind Dodging Bullets and then last year third behind Sprinter Sacre. He is another who has a good chance of making the frame.

The Minehead trainer Philip Hobbs sends Guarde La Victoire to the race. This is a lovely horse will again progress to a higher level but finds himself in a division of superstars. He is a horse of good ability but is one that would like a bit of cutting the ground. That said he wouldn't surprise me at all if he ran really well here today and I would put him at the pic of the rest.

The next horse we consider as Top Gamble. This horse is an interesting entry as he has been supplemented for the race at a late stage presumably to try and run into the good prize money that's on offer for being placed. He has improved this season and put up two good performances at this course. He would like soft ground so he would not like the ground to dry out too much.

The trainer Tom George has a second entry in the race in the form of Sir Valentino. He has been running with credit this year but I suspect will have to find improvement to finish in the frame.
