Only 9 runners in this top championship race could be seen as a little disappointing however when you take into consideration that the worlds best chaser (even if not on ratings), certainly over two miles is racing today it is perhaps a surprise that there are 8 in opposition to Altior.

Last years winner Altior is a great chaser. He is unbeaten in 17 races over hurdles or fences and is having a great season.

His season started at Sandown in December when in a 4 runner chase he beat the smart winner of the 2017 Ryanair chase Un De Sceaux by 4l. He then was seen at Kempton on Boxing day where another small field of 5 were beaten out of sight very easily by 19l. His final start was just as easy a win in a 3 runner field.

Altior is a 3 time Cheltenham festival winner. He took the Grade 1 novice hurdle in 2016 by 7l, followed by a 6l win in the Arkle the following year and last year won this race by 7l.

He had a few setbacks last season before coming to this race and looked to be off the bridle for a long way before stamping his authority on the race. He really is unopposable in the race and will win unless he has some mishap in the race.

Willie Mullins sends Min to race here. He is unbeaten this year and comes here in good form, however having been beaten twice at this course by Altior and easily last year in this race I can’t see any way he can overturn that. He is a good horse and should make the frame again.

Sceau Royal is a good horse but may have conditions against him today. He goes with some cut in the ground but if the expected rain gets to the course he could be at an advantage. If the ground is good then he should run well.

Saint Calvados is a French-bred horse and therefore any rain would not inconvenience him. He is a good young horse who ran well in last years Arkle and that experience will do him no harm. Another who should go well.

Paul Nichols sends the smart Politologue for the race. He is a good jumper and gets away from his fences well. He was 4th in the race last year and it would not be a surprise to see him beat that today.

Castlegrace Paddy is an Irish trained horse who’s bear form does not look quite good enough for this and he fell last time out.

God’s Own rarely runs a bad race and is a consistent type. He was third last year and is having a good season. Likes good ground.

Hells Kitchen won a good handicap at Ascot just before Christmas but this is a lot tougher.

Ordinary World is a nice horse but does not look up to this class.

Race Conditions : £400,000 guaranteed For 5yo+ which are allotted a rating of 130 or more by the BHA Handicapper following a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including the day prior to confirmation. Horses which are not qualified for a rating in Great Britain, Ireland or France may also be entered. Such horses may be eligible providing the Handicapper is satisfied that the horse's racecourse performances up to and including the day prior to confirmation would merit a minimum rating of 130. The decision of the BHA Handicapper shall be final. Weights 11st 10lb Allowances mares 7lb

Stewards Report

MIN (FR) wore earplugs and ALTIOR (IRE) wore earplugs which were removed at the start.

The Stewards noted that the Clerk of the Course had given permission for POLITOLOGUE (FR) to parade out of order. As the gelding was proving unruly he further allowed him to break the parade and canter to the start.

After reviewing the start the Stewards were satisfied that when the flag dropped the horses were well grouped but that SAINT CALVADOS (FR) and ALTIOR (IRE) jumped away quickly from the start.

Following the race Paddy Brennan reported that GOD’S OWN (IRE), which was pulled up, lost its action. The Veterinary Officer reported that a post-race examination of GOD'S OWN (IRE) found it to be lame left hind.
