St_Leger An_English_Classic

The_Race

The St.Leger. One of the five classic races in england for the top 3 year olds of the season. Run at a longer distance than the three previous classic races of 1m,1m and 1m4f to win this race a horse needs distance as well as speed in it's armoury.

On it's first running in 1776 and named simply as a sweepstakes the race was open to three year old colts and fillies and was run over two miles however it was re-named the following year after it's founder Anthony St. Leger a politician and army officer

The_2013_Race

Interesting race with the favorite Excess Knowledge only ever having won his maiden and has not put his head in front in susiquest group and listed races.

Leading Light unbeaten this seaosn come here on the back of two group 3 wins and looks to be going the right way.

English Derby 3rd and Irish Derby runner up Galileo Rock has top class form if not winning form and should run well today.

Race Conditions

For 3yo entire colts and fillies Weights colts 9st; fillies 8st 11lb

Number Drawn Form Name Age weight trainer Jockey Rating
1 10 34416 Cap OŽRushes 3 9-0 Charlie Appleby Mickael Barzalona 113
Winner of the Neptune Investment Management Group Stakes, a Group 3 race at Goodwood at the end of July, this Son Of New Approach. Takes a big step up in class today like many of his opponents. Likes some cut in the ground and not without a chance today.

Three wins from nine starts on ground ranging from good through to slow and up to a distance of 12 furlongs.

2 11 127-32 Excess Knowledge 3 9-0 John Gosden James Doyle 90
Favourite today although he has only won one race that being his maiden on his first run. Second behind Cap O'Rushes at Goodwood at the end of July. Nice horse, good chance.

One win from five starts on good to firm ground over eight furlongs.

3 9 1-2 Foundry 3 9-0 A P OŽBrien Ryan Moore 90
Only two runs in career so far this son of Galileo won his maiden in good style last year and was second to the smart, fancied Telescope on his only start the season. A big ask for a horse with so little experience but is bred for this trip.

One win from two starts on soft ground at a distance of seven furlongs.

4 1 15-332 Galileo Rock 3 9-0 David Wachman Wayne Lordan 118
Another horse today who has not won since his maiden debut. Third in the English Derby and one better when second in the Irish Derby were two very good performances. Every chance today.

One win from five starts over 1 mile on soft ground.

5 3 7-611 Great Hall 3 9-0 Brian Meehan Kieren Fallon 99
Has finally found the winning way this season winning his last two races. Both those races below this standard one being a handicap and the other a maiden stakes. Will need to find much improvement to take part in the finish here.

Two wins from four starts on good to firm ground up to a distance of 14 furlongs.

6 6 43537 Havana Beat 3 9-0 Andrew Balding Liam Keniry 103
Has been contesting group races without success this season and outsider with an outsider's chance.

One win from seven starts on good to firm ground over eight furlongs.

7 7 41-111 Leading Light 3 9-0 A P OŽBrien Joseph O'Brien 110
Four wins in his career including two good Group 3 races in Ireland and in England with the last being over 16 furlongs. Trip no problem handles the heavy ground looks to be one of the leading contenders here today.

4 wins from 5 starts on ground ranging from good to firm through to heavy and up to a distance of 16 furlongs.

8 2 14128 Libertarian 3 9-0 Charlie Appleby William Buick 108
Really nice horse and winner of the Group 2 Dante stakes at York back in May. Not certain to get this trip as breeding suggests shorter distances may be suitable. An interesting runner if he proves otherwise.

Two wins from five starts on ground ranging from good through to good to soft and up to a distance of 10 furlongs

9 8 211870 Ralston Road 3 9-0 John Patrick Shanahan Tadhg O'Shea 105
Has been running in good races without much success. We'll need to improve greatly on all known form to win this today.

Two wins from nine starts on ground ranging from good through to yielding and up to a distance of 12 furlongs.

10 5 136453 Secret Number 3 9-0 Saeed bin Suroor Silvestre De Sousa 106
Two good maidens and then tried in much higher class without success. Another will need to show improvement to win this race but will like the cut in the ground.

Two wins from seven starts on soft ground and up to a distance of 10 furlongs

11 4 31-117 Talent 3 8-11 Ralph Beckett Jim Crowley 119
Pretty Polly stakes winner who stepped up to classic success when winning the Epsom Oaks, a British classic, back in May. Very disappointing last run when last of seven in Ireland on fast ground. She gets the fillies allowance in this race and could be a contender.

Three wins from five starts on ground ranging from good to firm through to standard and up to a distance of 12 furlongs.
