St_Leger An_English_Classic

The_Race

The St.Leger. One of the five classic races in england for the top 3 year olds of the season. Run at a longer distance than the three previous classic races of 1m,1m and 1m4f to win this race a horse needs distance as well as speed in it's armoury.

On it's first running in 1776 and named simply as a sweepstakes the race was open to three year old colts and fillies and was run over two miles however it was re-named the following year after it's founder Anthony St. Leger a politician and army officer

The_2014_Race

An interesting race in prospect today with a few of the leading runners having run in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at Goodwood last month over two furlongs shorter than this distance.

The winner that day does not run today but the second Snow Sky, third Odeon, fourth Mazzoco, fifth Granddukeoftuscany and sixth Hartnell all running in this race.

The distances that day are of interest with Odeon in third place eight lengths behind Snow Sky (2nd) and the others three quarters of a length 1 3/4 of length and 1 3/4 lengths respectively.

Of those may be difficult to find out who if any would reverse the form with the others.

The favourite today Kingston Hill was not in that race but was second in what was a good Derby over a two furlongs shorter than this and looks spot on form. He is also a proven Group 1 winner.

So who will challenge the horse? Snow Sky is a group 3 winnerand looks as if the trip will suit today, and he must be a danger.

Windshear is ultra-consistent and for the first time since April with a little luck he is going to get some cut in the ground and is a really strong fancy today.

There are some horses today that seem to have little chance but with races at this distance and of this class few and between and many connections not wishing to risk exposing their horses two early this race can often throw up a surprise or two.

NUMBER DRAW FORM NAME AGE WEIGHT TRAINER JOCKEY RATING

1 5 278112 Alex My Boy 3 9-1 Mark Johnston Silvestre De Sousa 105
A handicap winner over this distance who will have to have improved considerably on what we've seen so far to win a race of this standard.
He has been in much better form this season and is improving.

2 13 8-2131 Forever Now 3 9-1 John Gosden Frankie Dettori 106
Consistent this season and a listed winner with his best run was perhaps when third in a Group 3 over a distance of 1 mile and 5 furlongs.
Here's another will have to do improve to win this race.

3 10 615 Granddukeoftuscany 3 9-1 A P OŽBrien Colm O'Donoghue 105
Unraced as a two-year-old and has been running over 1 1/2 miles this season.
He was fifth in the Great Voltigeur about 12 lengths behind the winner. Another who will have to win proved to win this.

4 6 52116 Hartnell 3 9-1 Mark Johnston Joe Fanning 110
Well exposed with 12 runs under his belt this horse is already a Group 3 winner. Could only manage sixth-place in the Great Voltigeur but looks better over this slightly longer distance. Not without a chance.

5 12 41123 Kings Fete 3 9-1 Sir Michael Stoute Ryan Moore 104
Only a listed winner but looks that type to get this extended trip. Will have to improve on what he has done so far.

6 4 11-824 Kingston Hill 3 9-1 Roger Varian Andrea Atzeni 120
Top class Group 1 winner over a mile. Stepping up in distance now and was a good second over a mile and a half in the Derby this year to the very smart Australia. Never really run his race in the Group 1 Coral-Eclipse at Sandown on unsuitable ground. The good to soft predictive going should be much better today and he is strongly fancied to win his first race of the season.

7 2 22354 Marzocco 3 9-1 John Gosden Robert Havlin 107
Fourth-place in the Great Voltigeur with some of these horses in behind that day. Will have to step up in both trip and class however he did run a good race over 2 miles in the Queens Vase at Ascot.

8 8 6215 Min Alemarat 3 9-1 Marco Botti Martin Harley 95
Lightly raced as it all to do here on known form.

9 1 14743 Odeon 3 9-1 James Given Graham Lee 103
A really nice well bred horse who has some good runs in good races, but is only a maiden winner so far. Looks to have a lot to do today but was in front of some of the others here when perhaps a surprise third in the Great Voltigeur.
It would not be a surprise to see this horse run into a place at really big odds.

10 14 31237 Romsdal 3 9-1 John Gosden William Buick 115
A really nice chestnut gelding he has been running in some top class races this year. Third in the Group 3 Chester Vase followed by a fine third place in the Derby. Last time out again over 1 1/2 miles the horse had his only disappointing run when he could manage only seventh in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot.
Improving and should have more to come a big show today expected from this horse.

11 9 1-4335 Scotland 3 9-1 Andrew Balding Jim Crowley 109
Placed in group races he will have to improve on what we've seen. Has run well over a mile and a half and not sure to get a distance.

12 7 21412 Snow Sky 3 9-1 Sir Michael Stoute James Doyle 111
Winner of the Group 3 Neptune Investment Management Gordon Stakes at Goodwood back in July was followed up with a really good second in the Great Voltigeur beating some of his rivals here today. Trying this distance for the first time today but looks like the trip will be absolutely no problem. An improving sort that has lots going for him today and would be a surprise if he is not fighting out the finish today.

13 11 537335 Somewhat 3 9-1 Mark Johnston Franny Norton 109
Has been contesting good group races this season and just falling short. May struggle here today unless as expected the extra distance suits him better than others.

14 3 212222 Windshear 3 9-1 Richard Hannon Richard Hughes 110
A really nice consistent horse who has been improving all season. Last two runs second places in Group 3's at Newmarket and Goodwood on ground that may have been a little too firm for this horse to show his best. Cut in the ground would certainly improve the horses chance and is likely to be there fighting out the finish and although he has been second to a couple of his opponents today I would expect him to put up a top-class performance today.
Another of the fancied runners.
