The_2014_Race

This is often the race that is won multiple times by the same horse. Seen as something of a speciality race for long-distance hurdlers and we often seem to get very good horses coming back time and again. That probably started back in 2002/2003 when we saw the very smart Baracuda win on both occasions.
The next dynasty was in 2007 2008 when the very smart Inglis Dreaver one on both occasions however since 2009 we saw a new kid on the block in the form of Big Buck's who has not lost in the race since, notching up five wins on the bounce. He missed last years race through injury. but is now back to try and claim his title. What makes today's race very interesting is that he was off the track for some time and also we see a wonder mare in the form of Annie Power who comes here with an unbeaten 10 wins from 10 runs. So today perhaps we have a real battle to be fought. As well as that this is by no means a match race because the smart At Fishers Cross, More of That and Rule the World all also have chances in the race. ~ A truly great race in prospect today.

Race Conditions: For 4yo+ which are allotted a rating of 130 or more by the BHA Head of Handicapping following a review of the horses entered and after taking account of races run up to and including March 6th. Horses which are not qualified for a rating in Great Britain, Ireland or France may also be entered. Such horses may be eligible providing the Handicapper is satisfied that the horse's racecourse performances up to and including March 6th would merit a minimum rating of 130. 1 11-4U2 At Fishers Cross 7 11-10 Rebecca Curtis A.P.McCoy 157
A really good seven-year-old who was unbeaten in six runs last season. A top-class horse who started this season slightly out of form however the stable is now coming into form and I would expect this horse to produce his best running so far. He has won up to a distance of 3 miles and one furlong sp todays trip should not be a problem and he should handle the ground as his eight lengths win at Aintree last season was on similar ground. A really good chance should the two at the head of the market not perform to their best.
8 wins from 13 starts (6 hurdle wins from 11 hurdle starts) on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong.

2 11/1-3 Big Buck´s 11 11-10 Paul Nicholls Sam Twiston-Davies 170
Absolutely top-class, consistent, and truly brilliant over hurdles at this distance. Has been off with an injury and with only one run this season where a reasonable third, ended an 18 winning streak. If back to his best I would expect him to win easily today however there must be question marks to his form as he is returning from injury and also he is now 11 years old. Will have to give seven pounds to Annie Power today who gets the mares allowance here today. His trainer states he has him as best as he can get him and is very bullish about his chances today. His 4 to 1 odds today are massive if he is on song as this horse rarely starts odds against.
23 wins from 39 starts (20 hurdle wins from 32 starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong.

3 6-1613 Celestial Halo 10 11-10 Paul Nicholls Daryl Jacob 161
A fine hurdler and multiple Grade 2 winner of long-distance hurdles, I guess you could say this horse like many has suffered from the brilliance of Big Buck's. He takes his chance here today but realistically he may just be running for a place.
11 race wins from 41 starts (10 hurdle wins from 31 starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong.

4 21-231 Mala Beach 6 11-10 Gordon Elliott * 152
NON-RUNNER

5 11P-22 Medinas 7 11-10 Alan King Wayne Hutchinson 154
A nice enough hurdler who has not yet won a hurdle race beyond 2 miles 5 furlongs. The winner of the Coral Cup at this meeting last year. A good young horse with good form but he will have to show vast improvement to get into the frame today.
5 wins from 15 starts (4 wins from 13 hurdle starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 7 furlongs.

6 1-111 More Of That 6 11-10 Jonjo O´Neill Barry Geraghty 160
Turning into a very fine hurdler this bay gelding is unbeaten in four runs so far. He is a grade 2 winner over two and miles 5 furlongs and today takes a step up in class. He is taking on this extended distance for the first time and is something of an unknown quantity. Sure to improve and a good show may mean that we have a good talent for the future. The stable jockey has chosen another horse today but Barry Geraghty takes the ride and he won this year's Champion hurdle on a spare ride two days ago. Certainly not without a chance and given that the two in the head of the market, one coming back from a layoff and the second has never run over this distance, if they don't perform today this horse could win or if either one doesn't perform could easily make the frame. Whatever he does today I'm sure he will be better next year.
4 wins from 4 starts all in hurdle races, in ground ranging from good through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 5 furlongs

7 01314 Reve De Sivola 9 11-10 Nick Williams Richard Johnson 161
A really nice hurdler and course winner when he took the Cleeve hurdle over 3 miles in January 2013. Loves soft or heavy going and is often taken to France for runs. He is perhaps despite being a course and a distance winner not up to the standard of this grade one race on what he has shown so far and would be something of a surprise winner. Like almost all of the good runners in the race today not without a chance of making the frame.
8 wins from 30 starts (7 wins from 20 hurdle starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong.

8 P-1421 Rule The World 7 11-10 M F Morris Brian O'Connell 158
An Irish raider, this seven-year old comes here today with the potential improvement to come. He was second behind a very smart The New One in last season's Festival which shows that he likes the course. Well supported but will have to improve quite a bit to win this race. Sure to be supported in the market and is an interesting runner.
5 wins from 10 starts all in hurdle races on ground ranging from soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs **note Horse has point-to- point win over 3 miles**

9 15-222 Salubrious 7 11-10 Paul Nicholls Nick Scholfield 153
A nice young seven-year-old horse from the Paul Nicholls yard. He is consistent but too often finds a horse just too good in a race. He was the winner of the Martin Pipe conditional jockeys handicap hurdle at this Festival last year. A good horse who is another will need to improve very considerably to win today. One major thing in this horses favour is that he seems to be one of the few who would really love the drying ground today.
4 wins from 12 starts (3 wins from 10 hurdle starts) on ground ranging from good to firm through to soft and up to a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs.

10 1-2222 Zarkandar 7 11-10 Paul Nicholls Noel Fehily 162
Another top class hurdler from the Paul Nicholls stable, a very consistent horse who takes on the best regularly at distances between 2 and 2 1/2 miles. This season he has conme second on four occasions and has come up against top class two milers time and time again. Trying this distance for the first time today and if he takes to it he could be the best of the outsiders. Travels well in the race and beat the Champion hurdle fancied horse The New One over 2 miles 4 furlongs at Aintree last season. A very interesting runner indeed.
9 wins from 18 starts (8 wins from 15 hurdle starts) on ground ranging from good through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs.

11 11-111 Annie Power 6 11-3 W P Mullins R. Walsh 165
The Irish wonder mare Annie Power is unbeaten in 10 starts. She is top class and wins all of her races by wide margins with the last four wins being 12 lengths, 5 lengths, 8 lengths, and 15 lengths respectively. Has only been tried so far up to 2 miles and 4 furlongs but would surely get further the question is will she get 3 miles. If she lasts the distance today she should win given that she's getting the seven pounds mares allowance from all other horses.
A worthy favourite but like so many at the Cheltenham Festival not unbeatable.
10 wins from 10 starts (7 hurdle wins from 7 hurdle starts) on ground ranging from good to soft through to heavy and up to a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs.
