This looks like a good strong competitive stayers hurdle this year and we need to start off with the favourite Paisley Park who could only finish 13th at the festival last season but since than has seen a huge improvement in his performances. He is unbeaten this season and showed a great turn of foot by winning the Cleeve hurdle on this course back in January. He has gone up 16lbs in the ratings and could well be the horse they all have to beat.

11-year-old and Cheltenham regular Faugheen was the 2015 Champion Hurdle winner. He has bags of class but has not been seen at his best for the last few seasons when running over 2 miles. He was tried at 3 miles at the Punchestown festival last April and was a very smart winner taking the scalp of Penhill in the process. Most recently has was running really well in the race that Apple’s Jade won in Ireland. If anywhere near his best and with a clear round should be thereabouts at the finish.

Supasundae was second to Penhill last year in this race. He is a Festival winner taking the Coral Cup two years ago. He is a good consistent hurdler and it would be no surprise to see him running very well here.

Barcardys was going really well in this race last year before falling at the last fence. He is a good talented horse but has fallen in 3 of his last 5 starts.

Black Op is another consistent type of horse. He was beaten a long way 3rd at this course and distance by Paisley Park back in January. Although he is likely to be spot on fitness wise for the race, he has a bit to find but could well improve.

Killbricken Storm won the Albert Bartlett Nove hurdle at last seasons festival. He started novice chasing at the start of the season winning a chase at Ffos Lass on heavy ground but made too many mistakes when upped in class at Newbury. He now returns to hurdles and looks a very interesting runner. I expect this horse to go very well.

Top Notch is another top-class consistent sort of horse He was second to Yorkhill in the JLT in 2017. He was third behind Paisley Park in December at Ascot and won a good listed chase at Kempton at the start of the year. An interesting runner returning to hurdles.

West Approach is a good sort who put poor Cheltenham runs behind him when he was second to Paisley Park in the Cleeve Huddle. He got first run on the winner could not catch him once he was passed. This was a good run and I expect him to be closer in this race.

Bapaume has been running well in Ireland this season but would need to improve somewhat to win this race.

Coquine Mans won a Grade 2 in Ireland this time last year but has been well out of form since. He loves soft ground so that should help but lack of any recent form is a worry.

Wholestone often runs well at this track but he was beaten a long way in the Cleeve hurdle and Daryl Jacob has chosen to Ride top notch when given the choice.

Petit Mouchoir is a really good Irish horse and a Cheltenham regular. He runs well here but without winning. He has been running around 2 miles under rules but was a point-to-point winner in Ireland over three miles. It is interesting to see his stepped up in trip.

Sam Spinner was the favourite for this race last year on the back of a good season. He ran well finishing 5th but he has lost all his form at the start of this reason being unseated twice but showed some improvement in the Cleeve finishing 4th 24l behind Paisley Park. I expect him to get closer.

Keeper Hill. A good horse but was beaten out of sight in a grade 2 at Sandown. May find this class of race too good.

Yanworth 6th last year’s renewal and only one run this year when pulled up. Blinkers now fitted.

Nautical Nitwit. Won the Bet 365 hurdle (Grade 2) in November but this is a much better race and he looks as if he may struggle here.

Man of Plenty No chance on any known fall and looks to be an also ran.

So that’s it. Lots of runners and there seems to be plenty without a real chance. Of the ones that are likely to run well Paisley Park is having a great season, Will it continue? well who can tell. Won the Cleeve in good style and is a worthy fav. Faugheen is a top-class hurdler. If he gets a good run he will be in the fight at the finish and if there he will ensure it is a fight. Only 2 11-year-olds have ever won this so the stats are against him but this is some horse. Would not be a surprise winner by any means. Supasundae always runs well and the trainer and jockey have great records in races at this course, Petit Mouchoir could run a big race at this didtance for the first time, but I think that Killbricken Storm could be the one to take this prize on his return to hurdles.
